Interesting posts thanks guys. I tow moderately heavy trailers (4000 lbs) with my GS430, and in cruise will select 5th, rather than lugging in top. A couple of questions;
1. Will the lock-up occur in 4th & 5th?
It should. I'm not familiar with that transmission specifically, but generally speaking the TC will lock up at >40mph in the top 2-3 gears.

If you're towing mostly on flat roads at constant speed you are probably ok. But that's a pretty heavy load for a sedan, so if you're doing a lot of stop/go or elevation changes, definitely worth considering adding some cooling capacity.
Yeah, you are reflecting my thinking.
- AJT123; the 4,000 lb is an extreme, and rarely that heavy. Mostly in the 3500-3800 lb range. It handles it fine.
- geko29; thanks for your thoughts. If the car tells me it's not happy, I'll certainly be installing a cooler.
Another question, my 2005 GS430 was sold in Japan, and is a Gen 3 subsequently imported to New Zealand, where I live. It has active sway bars, with all the control components in the trunk (see photo). I have two repair manuals, and neither cover this, so my questions are;
1 was the active sway bar an option, not a standard fit?
2 does anyone know where I can find the Repair manual / technical data covering this installation?
