Hyundai Motor Reports 2020 Global Sales and 2021 Goals
- Hyundai’s 2020 global sales total 3.74 million units, down 15.4% Y/y
⋯ Korea sales rise 6.2%; overseas sales retreat 19.8% amid COVID-19 - December sales decline 6.4% Y/y to 373,970 units
- Company targets 2021 global sales of 4.16 million units
⋯ to sell 3.42 million units overseas; 741,500 units in Korea home market
Led by the popularity of SUV models and eco-friendly line-up, sales in the Korea market increased 6.2 percent to 787,854 units while those out of Korea dropped 19.8 percent as the sluggish economic activities dented auto demand in most regions.
While competition in global automotive markets gets ever fiercer this year amid recovering auto demand worldwide, Hyundai aims to sell 4.16 million units around the globe in 2021 with optimized business strategies by each region. The company targets to sell 741,500 units in Korea and 3.41 million units in overseas markets.
For December, monthly sales totaled 373,970 units including 305,484 for overseas markets.
The company will continue implementing diverse measures to take care of its customers and to offer the world-best products meeting their needs. Furthermore, the company plans to solidify its global leadership in eco-friendly mobility market with the launch of upcoming IONIQ 5—its first dedicated BEV model.

?Subject=GM 2020 Sales Far Outperfor...5-gmsales.html - Fourth-quarter and full-year trifecta with total, retail and fleet share gains
- GM is the 2020 full-size pickup sales leader with 839,691 deliveries, thanks to Chevrolet Silverado sales gains and record GMC Sierra deliveries
- Total 2020 pickup sales matched 2019 results; retail deliveries were up 2 percent
- Seven of every 10 full-size SUV retail units sold in Q4 were a Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban or GMC Yukon thanks to conquest and strong pent-up demand for all-new models
- All-new Cadillac Escalade retook market leadership in its segment in Q4, with 43 percent of new Escalades transacting above $100,000
GM estimates it gained market share across the board in total, retail and fleet deliveries for both the 4th quarter and calendar year.
Retail sales for the industry began to recover in May and reached pre-pandemic levels during the fourth quarter. Sales to fleets are recovering but remain sharply lower, especially daily rental deliveries. Average transaction prices set fourth-quarter and full-year records at $41,886 and $39,229, respectively.
“GM outperformed the industry in the quarter and the full year by a significant margin because our manufacturing and supply chain teams and dealers helped keep people safe at work and our launches on track,” said Steve Carlisle, GM executive vice president and president, GM North America. “Extraordinary teamwork has set up everyone to succeed in 2021 as the economy continues to recover and we further ramp up truck and SUV production.”
In 2021, GM expects to have a full year of production of the all-new Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. GM has also announced plans to build full-size pickups in Oshawa, Ontario starting in early 2022.
GM is especially bullish about its new full-size SUVs, which began launching at the company’s Arlington Assembly plant in Texas in April.
“Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac set the bar high for these products in terms of technology, refinement and utility, and sales are exceeding our expectations,” Carlisle said. “We launched them on time despite the pandemic, and the team in Arlington is working around the clock to meet demand. We have quickly recaptured all the short-term gains our competitors made as we transitioned to the all-new models.”
Sales highlights (vs. 2019)
- For the second consecutive year, the GMC Sierra had its best fourth-quarter and full-year retail and total sales ever, with total deliveries up 14 percent in the quarter and 9 percent for the year
- Fourth-quarter GMC retail deliveries were up 14 percent, with five models up by double digits, including the Yukon and Yukon XL (up 41 percent), Canyon (up 42 percent), Sierra (up 14 percent) and Acadia (up 26 percent)
- Fourth quarter retail deliveries for Chevrolet were up 12 percent, driven by the success of the all-new Trailblazer and sharply higher sales for almost every other model, including the Corvette (up 158 percent), Bolt EV (up 106 percent), Tahoe (up 78 percent), Suburban (up 56 percent), Traverse (up 31 percent), Colorado (up 21 percent), Silverado (up 15 percent) and Malibu (up 11 percent)
- Chevrolet Silverado crew cabs had their best quarter and calendar-year retail and total sales ever, and the Chevrolet Traverse had its best-ever fourth-quarter total and retail sales
- Cadillac outperformed the retail luxury industry with its best fourth-quarter retail share and sales since 2016. Retail deliveries were up 16 percent in the quarter, driven by the successful launches of the new CT4, CT5 and Escalade, which was up 19 percent. The Cadillac XT5 was up 10 percent
- Fourth-quarter retail deliveries of the Buick Enclave were up 21 percent and the all-new Buick Encore GX is now the brand’s best-selling nameplate
- GM grew share of all three fleet segments. Total fleet share increased nearly 2 points in the 4th quarter and for the calendar year
- Sales to small businesses were up 27 percent in the fourth quarter and up 5 percent for the full year
“We look forward to an inflection point for the U.S. economy in spring,” said GM Chief Economist Elaine Buckberg. “Widening vaccination rates and warmer weather should enable consumers and businesses to return to a more normal range of activities, lifting the job market, consumer sentiment and auto demand.”
GM ended 2020 with inventory of 410,875 units, including in-transit units, down 205,148 units year over year. Fourth-quarter incentive spending as a percent of ATP was 10.7 percent, close to the industry average, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates.

FCA US Reports 4th Quarter and Full-year 2020 Sales Results
Attached
Sales Chart (pdf)
\- 4th-quarter retail sales rise 1%
- Ram brand reports best month of retail sales ever in December
- Jeep® Gladiator fourth-quarter sales increase 23% and 94% for 2020
- Alfa Romeo posts record fourth quarter as sales rise 23%
- Jeep® Gladiator fourth-quarter sales increase 23% and 94% for 2020
- Ram brand reports best month of retail sales ever in December
January 5, 2021 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC sold 499,431 vehicles in the 4th quarter and 1,820,636 vehicles for 2020 as a resilient dealer network offset much of the decline in fleet sales caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Retail sales for the quarter rose 1% due in large part to the Jeep®, Ram and Alfa Romeo brands. Separately, Ram also had its best month of retail sales in December since the brand first launched in 2010.
The Jeep Gladiator once again reported a year-over-year increase for the quarter as total sales rose 23% to 20,552 vehicles. Gladiator sales for the year increased 94% to 77,542 vehicles. Alfa Romeo also finished out 2020 with quarterly total sales of 6,093 vehicles, an increase of 23% and full-year sales of 18,586, a 2% increase over the previous year.
Overall, total U.S. sales for the quarter declined 8% while full-year sales were down 17%. Most of the decline came from the sharp drop in fleet orders, specifically rental car companies, which continue to grapple with the reduction in business travelers due to the pandemic.
“The work undertaken by our dealers was nothing less than heroic given the challenges they faced this year,” U.S. Head of Sales Jeff Kommor said. “The fourth quarter provided a strong springboard heading into 2021. Looking ahead, we anticipate an exciting year that will include a variety of new vehicles. Just in the first quarter alone, we will be offering the Ram 1500 TRX, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392, the refreshed Dodge Durango and the refreshed Chrysler Pacifica.”
Production of the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX began in December at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan. That same month, the TRX was named the winner of the Motor Trend Truck of the Year® competition, marking the third consecutive year the Ram brand captured the coveted award. Ram 1500 won in 2019 and Ram Heavy Duty took top honors for 2020.
Production of the Wrangler 4xe, which boasts 375 horsepower and delivers up to 25 miles of pure electric operation for daily commutes, started in December at the Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio.
“The economic indicators are pointing in the right direction for the start of 2021,” Kommor said. “Gas prices remain low; housing remains strong and consumers have access to credit.”

- Strong finish to Q4 2020 includes two months of record consumer deliveries.
- Q4 2020 sales greatly exceed expectations, down only 2.0% in a challenging year.
- Consumer demand, collaboration with dealers, increased U.S. production and improved inventory levels propel strong fourth quarter.
- BMW Light Truck sales increase 9.6% in Q4 2020 vs Q4 2019; Full BMW X model line-up accounts for 60% of 2020 sales.
BMW Brand
In the fourth quarter of 2020, BMW brand sales totaled 98,750 vehicles, only a 2.0% decrease from the 100,797 vehicles sold in the 4th quarter of 2019.** For the full year 2020, BMW brand sales decreased 17.5% on total sales of 278,732 compared to the 338,003 vehicles sold in 2019.
MINI Brand
MINI brand sales totaled 8,549 vehicles in the 4th quarter of 2020, a decrease of 3.6% vs the 8,864 vehicles sold in the 4th quarter of 2019.** For the full year 2020, MINI brand sales decreased 22.4% on total sales of 28,138 compared to the 36,272 vehicles sold in 2019.
Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing global pandemic, BMW brand sales in the U.S. improved significantly in the 2nd half of the year – including several outstanding months -- as the sales network reopened, production restarted, and inventory levels improved. The last 4 months of the year were particularly strong, owing much to increased production at Plant Spartanburg, which helped meet customer demand for top selling models such as the BMW X3, X5 and X7 Sports Activity Vehicles.
“There is no doubt that 2020 was a challenging year for automotive sales, but we have found that these challenges were due more to the circumstances, rather than consumer demand,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America. “We owe our dealers and regional teams a lot of credit for their flexibility and dedication while adapting to the situation. With their support we felt very confident throughout the second half of the year as consumer deliveries grew quickly -- even exceeding own expectations.”
