i don't follow trucks that much but how does this relate to a ford ranger? don't know if ranger still exists but if it does, isn't this similar?
This will be smaller, likely less payload/towing as it's based on a FWD platform, lower power engines I would imagine. Ranger still exists, and will likely move up a hair in size with its next generation.
This will compete a bit with the Hyundai Santa Cruz for those young/active/urban buyers.
Standard hybrid with FWD capable of 40 MPG in the city is pretty awesome for little fleet rig users. Pricing starts at $21,490 with destination, but can get up just shy of $40K for a Lariat with a traditional gas turbo, all wheel drive, etc. That's about $4K below where the Tacoma with the Utility package (rear seat delete, etc) starts. About $5,000 below the cheapest Ranger. 4.5 foot bed is still short, but slightly longer than the Santa Cruz.
1,500 lbs of payload and between 2,000 and 4,000 lbs of towing capacity.

Yes, the Ranger is still in the Ford lineup, although, from what I can tell, its sales have not been all that great...I was not very impressed with it when I looked at it.
However, the Ranger, unimpressive or not, is a real pickup, with a truck-ladder-frame and RWD/4WD. The Maverick is just another FWD unibody/crossover with a pickup bed. In that sense, it is much closer to the old Subaru Baja or the new Hyundai Santa Cruz than to the Ranger or the Explorer Sport-Trac. It also comes with a standard hybrid powertrain.
If that 21K base-price figure that pbm317 posted is accurate, I can see this thing selling like hotcakes, particularly for those who don't need the optional AWD. In fact, I think it could turn out to be an interesting rivalry between the Maverick and Santa Cruz, although of course, the hybrid powertrain on the Maverick is one advantage.

This is where you constantly go into your own opinion on things where facts are readily available. I will never understand this.
Ranger is selling fine, especially given it's at the end of its lifecycle. Ranger outsold Colorado last year. Outsold the ancient Frontier nearly 2-1.
Ranger is doing fine and continues to fill a nice chunk in the Ford portfolio.
Then, with all due respect, let me refresh your memory. First of all, I did not state it as a fact, but what I've seen, in my area, on the roads....and we have a lot of traffic in this area, so that is sometimes a good cross-section. Second, there is an old saying......figures don't lie, but sometimes liars figure.
I tend to agree. Given the rush to crossovers nowadays, it probably would have been a good potential replacement. But, like it or not, it's going to have to share the market with a new (and potentially strong) Hyundai Santa Cruz competitor.
Excellent entry. This will take over sales from many other vehicles and be something GM wished it got on. All the numbers are right, especially the price and mpg's (although the destination charge is ridiculous). Even the color selection is winning.
Only drawbacks appear to be the dated Honda Pilot Frankenstein face and somewhat cheap/dated interior design. But overall, this will be a ripping success for Ford.

It is an extremely limited sample, no matter how much you love you tout the size of traffic of the DC metro area. It is not representative of the national market place.
And there's nothing to point that the Ranger sales "are not that great" and it's not something that should be taken from opinion when there is data, in this case fairly quantifiable and objective data, that is easily accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
