Struts for sure but not a deal killer if a prop is what a car I want to buy comes with. My deal killers are, steering wheel that only heats up on the sides, small info screen, lack of any new safety features, push button shifter, joy stick or track pad instead touch screen to name a few.
i guess i am the only one who wishes my vehicles had both - struts to assist with the opening and closing, and a prop rod to take the stress off the struts for extended periods of being open

Good point ....but I doubt that automakers would spend the extra money to do that, at least on production vehicles.
You never bothered to check the oil? (assuming it had a dipstick, which not all vehicles today do).
Nope, never bothered to check the oil. Lexus serviced it every 5000 miles and it was never down even a quart. I'm sure it had a dipstick, but I never used it.

On vehicles with a dipstick and no oil-computer, most auto manufacturers (and this is clearly spelled out in the Owners' Manual) consider it the owner's responsibility to check the oil between changes/services. If oil-use falls below a certain level (with most manufacturers, it's around a quart every 1000 miles or so), they will do warranty engine repairs or replacement.
GM and Subaru, in particular, have had consumption problems on their recent non-turbo 2.4L Ecotec and 2.0L/2.5L flat-fours, mainly from poorly-fitted piston rings.
Admittedly, though (yes, me included)...we're getting somewhat off-topic. We already have an active thread on manually checking oil.
The gas struts for the hood or elsewhere can be weak when cold & fine when warm so if you rarely open the hood when it's cold winter time, you can delay replacing them.
