No. With all due respect, you are way off track. It is not a matter of UAW extortion...in fact, it's close, in some ways, to being exactly the opposite. UAW money, in the 2008-2009 buyout, actually helped to save GM from bankruptcy....they put up part of the package, along with the government, taxpayers, snd bondholders. All they asked for, during a time of high GM profits now, was some concessions in return......concessions which GM not only refused, but rewarded the UAW (and their sedan customers) by shutting down several plants, throwing tens of thousands out of work, and removing those vehicles out of the U.S. market. Absolutely outrageous...and IMO the strike was more than deserved. What's more, GM's reputation, among not only the UAW but the general public as well, has been seriously damaged....they are going to lose business from a lot of angry people. The Silverado, their (former) best seller, has already been the first victim (now bumped down into third place behind the F-150 and Ram 1500)...although some of that is also the excellence of the new Ram itself.
However, it is naive to think a big corporation like GM, with the most market share in the US is going to turn around and write a feel good story for the UAW. UAW are already getting a 4% raise, a huge ratification bonus, and a great profit sharing plan. Apple Corp could pay their Apple Store workers the same UAW wage they will be getting now, but they won’t. Toyota could pay their Mexican Tacoma assemblers the same wage as their Texas Tacoma assemblers, but they won’t.
lots of shoulda, but the world does not work this way.

Saved GM from bankruptcy? They went bankrupt, period. NGMCO Inc was allowed to purchase the assets of old GM mainly due to the $33 billion dollar government loan.

Only on paper, for a very brief period. They never actually shut down operations or went out of business (at least for Chevy, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac), thanks to the money-grants from both the UAW and the other sources I mentioned. The other four divisions, of course, folded......but that had been previously planned anyway, bankruptcy or no bankruptcy .

Whatever makes you feel better about GM but they went bankrupt the original corporation of General Motors no longer exists, don't believe me try to sue them. And yes it's all on paper that's kinda how this all works.

We won't necessarily have to have another thread like this, even if GM does stay in business. Better management in the future on their part, and more sensible decisions, will prevent one.

An apparent deal to end the part of the strike affecting Volvo-owned Mack trucks has been reached. The UAW struck mack Trucks on Oct. 12.

OK, bit...it's up to you, but, if you want to close the thread, IMO now's probably as good a time as any. The big GM strike is now pretty much over. The UAW rank-and-file membership, by 57-43% voted to approve the latest contract proposal. Here are some links with the details:

But that strike was over in less than three days. This strike is the longest auto industry work stoppage in more than 20 years, and the longest nationwide auto strike in 50 years.
