I-Team: 'Insane' Car Modification Mimics Gunfire, Could Cause Panic
A classic example of why the media is a joke to me. A straight pipe exhaust does not cause backfire. I have anti-lag and rolling anti-lag on my Supra both controlled by the Infinity ECU, no straight pipe here I've hit 2-step once or twice in 3 years. Some cars come now come stock with burple tunes etc...and even on this very forum in some of the sections I've seen some that want backfire/burple mods/tunes.
Per the news report they are urging anyone that sees a straight pipe car to call the police
Be safe our there NYC folks.

Be safe our there NYC folks. One of the latest trends in custom car modifications, called “straight piping,” goes way beyond style; some say it could spark panic
The tweak involves removing portions of a car’s exhaust system to produce loud pops and flashes that fire like gunshots out of the tailpipe
A John Jay associate prof says the pops could fool ShotSpotter, a network of acoustic sensors used by police departments to detect gunfire

In many jurisdictions, it is, in fact, illegal to remove a catalytic-converter from an otherwise street-legal vehicle if it will cause the vehicle to fail an emissions-test. Those converters are carefully designed by engineers to work in conjunction with unleaded fuel, the engine's computer, the oxygen-sensor, and the engine's management-controls, particularly if the car has a turbo, and removing them can potentially open the door to all kinds of other problems.
