The new TRD Avalon is kind of like a new modern Ford SHO

 

Except it has no power. The Ford SHO is legendary. The Avalon won't hardly be remembered and pretty much a poseur car.

 

Not even close. The first two generations of the SHO had a sweet Yamaha V6 that revved to 8000rpm and were available with a manual transmission. The third upped the ante to a Yamaha/Cosworth V8. The fourth and final had a Twin-Turbo V6 and AWD. They were true budget performance sedans.

The Avalon TRD, by contrast, has the same 3.5L V6 that has been in every Toyota since 1922 and....swaybars. <yawn>

That's one reason why that powerplant is so reliable. Time has helped perfect it.

 

64 hp difference between the Avalon and current SHO. Avalon has more gears. Whatevs, at least Toyota has not cancelled their sedans and are doing something in their full size segment.

 

The first SHO did 0-60 in the mid 6 second range and was built in the late 1980s. The Avalon does 0-60 in 6 seconds now. A 0.5 second difference after 30 years.

 

What does the current SHO do?

 

Sadly the SHO died when it too became a poseur car. Mostly for show, not much go and handles like a boat. Avalon too can best be described as a sporty land yacht at best.

 

We are talking about the new Avalon TRD. I will be interested to know it handles. There is nothing wrong with a land yacht, choice for customers is always good.

 

I'm not disagreeing. Best land yacht in the business not a luxury brand. It's the sporting look that most make fun of.

 

It's not difficult to see what part of the Avalon gets the most ribbing.
