Can offer a second confirmation that using Android Auto, I can have Waze on the main screen while my wife uses Google Play Music on my phone to pick out some music.
BippuLexus, not to pile on, but again to correct a point you've made a few times claiming you can't use CP plus another standard infotainment component (via a split screen).
On my 2018 BMW I can have absolutely have both CP and standard IDrive apps running simultaneously on the primary display. I can even have Waze/Google Maps/Apple Maps running on the left, and BMW factory navigation (or audio, or other factory features) running on the right....
Wow. BMW is definitely making it's own statement. Drivers want to feel sophisticated and smart. Audi pushes the envelope with the cockpit experience. Of course, all of this adds a hidden unique customization cost to the car. Thanks for sharing!

James,
Just because iDrive allows it doesn't mean other car companies allow it. As you may know - Apple Car Play and Android Auto function differently across infotainment systems. Which is one of the reason why it'll be hard to do a full integration.
Other infotainment systems I was referencing to that can't split screen Apple Car Play are:
Lexus Enform 2.0 (2019 Lexus ES)
Mercedes Benz
Audi
Toyota Entune
Honda
Nissan
and list goes on... Just because one system does it - doesn't mean they all do it...

Unlike the other poster, I'm not going to claim to know how a system I haven't used works. So I'll allow for the possibility that CarPlay works the way you describe. If so, it's kind of silly and hopefully Apple will fix it at some point.
As shown above, he/she also said that Android Auto was limited in a similar fashion. It is not. It is quite easy to have 2 or more Android Auto apps running at the same time (only one onscreen at a time, obviously, though it's easy to switch between them), while also using something else directly on the device.
I'm not sure why I should obligated to further respond to someone who has so completely and thoroughly destroyed their own credibility.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Case in point:
Yes, that's CarPlay on half the screen, and the built-in SiriusXM tuner on the other half.
Firstly - hes not lying. Go to your Apple Car Play and please have the "Music App" on the car screen and then click "messages" on your phone. See what happens. If its a mirrored app, it reflect to the same thing...
Watch from 4:17 and see how the phone mirrors the screen if its a mirrored function...
You are claiming he doesn't know how Apple Car Play works when hes an Audi owner that has Apple Car Play? Lol...
That's what he meant... He meant that you can't have them shown at the same time... Its well-known you can have background apps running...
However - he didn't. He was right about his point. He was right that in Audi and Audi's system he can't split screen. And you failed at seeing his point. He was claiming you can't have Music on the screen of your car while having messages on your phone. It was looking at a 1:1 situation. He was referencing you can't have Pandora open on your screen and have Apple Music on your phone open at the same time.
Secondly - I believe you don't want to address his second points because hes right. Google Map and Waze can't use HUD. You can't use Siri within Apple Car Play to change your A/C temp or other things - just like how you can't use Amazon Alexa to control your Apple Car Play.
Again - like I said replying to James. Just because some cars allow split screen - not all cars allow split screen. My reference was towards cars that aren't allowing spit screen. Just because you show one picture - doesn't prove that Apple Car Play supports split screen. What it proves is that some car infotainment systems can support split screen. My references was to those that don't.

Wow. Just wow. I even bolded it for you and you still think he's talking about CarPlay? here it is again, I'll make it red this time, maybe that will help:
even with Android, since both CarPlay and AA are essentially simply a form of phone screen mirrors (not exact mirror, the UI gets adjusted) you can't have one app on the MMI display and another app in use on the phone.
To repeat. This. Is. A. Lie.

Some car companies obviously allow it (Chrysler and BMW, to name two). So your statement is false. That is not the same thing as saying "some cars do not support it", which is what you are now trying to claim you said.

So did you know all along that some systems allowed for split screen? You didn’t seem to allude to that in many of your posts, I was thinking all along that it was either Car Play/AA or manufacturer infotainment screen because of your posts.
all this back and forth (and misinformation) is rather pointless, but shows AA/AC has a bright future and more possibilities are coming. will in car infotainment systems go away, no.
car makers have to be quite strategic about this because AA/AC allows a car to be 'dumb' and provide AA/AC and thus cell streaming music, waze/maps, etc., which on the one hand is a selling benefit, but on the other hand means the car maker doesn't get the big profit from the 'upgraded' infotainment system. but then many buyers don't want to spend the x000 on that anyway, so by providing AA/AC on low models they have a selling advantage vs those who don't. i think it was ford, and maybe honda, and that now have AA/AC on EVERY model? i think younger buyers will simply expect it. i think toyota's made a giant mistake in not wanting to be a leader here because they like to be independent.
but that leads to another strategic question: what happens to 'high end' infotainment systems if all cars have AA/AC? well i think they can still be differentiated... first off, audio quality. i've no doubt audi, lexus, etc. does very nicely (profits) selling b&o, mark levinson, etc. so there's that. but what about beyond sound? i do see where a car simply becomes like your 'second phone' and can be connected to all your cloud accounts so your contacts are just 'there' and you don't need the phone at all. now 'notifications' can be a problem with too much distraction so that will have to be thought out - maybe you get an indicator but can't read certain things unless stopped in park. the bigger step though is car access to AI/assistants. my g90's 'google button' is a simple step but it's AWESOME. i press it, can say any kind of place i want to find, and it does a google search and lists matches. i can then pick a match with the controller and i get to see info, address, phone, etc., and can start 'guidance' (nav) if i wish. i also like how on the phone app (from anywhere of course) i can map a destination and then 'send it' to my car so i can use in car nav as soon as i get in it. this allows me to pre-setup car destinations from the couch

BippuLexus has lost all credibility, at this point. I think most readers here understand what their choices are, as well as what the various pros/cons are.
ok have some new first hand experience to share...
my car has scheduled (first) maintenance today at local hyundai/genesis dealer. they brought a brand new but low trim santa fe. i'll share some more on it in a separate thread, but here i'll share about Android Auto (and Apple CarPlay) since it has both and I decided to try out Android Auto.
the car's 'infotainment' system is very basic. it has fm/am/bluetooth/phone features. i connected the phone via cable to the usb (i don't believe the car can do wireless AA/AC but it's not a biggie as there's a large nice 'bin' to put the phone in and it works well with a short usb-c to usb-a cord i have for my pixel 2xl).
one time setting it up, pretty obvious:
'home screen' on AA, overview of some things. the 5 touch buttons at the bottom are launch phone nav (it prompts for google maps or waze if you have both installed), phone, the home screen, audio, and return to car infotainment. very simple.
nav with waze. looked good although pretty muted colors. you can do voice search which is awesome to find anything (my most used: "nearest starbucks" haha).
some waze menu options from the 3 line menu icon
playing music:
the car:
i have to say, it worked better than the last time i tried it just a few months ago on a genesis g80. i thought the screen looked better and it worked better, but maybe my very limited time with each wasn't/isn't accurate.
anyway, this basic santa fe comes with most safety tech standard including lane keep assist, adaptive cruise, rear view camera, not sure about blind spot monitoring and i don't think it has parking sensors.
plugging in my phone made me forget it's a basic infotainment system except for sirius/xm missing.
and the fact i can use google assistant is just awesome... "what's my day look like?" and it tells me quick weather, upcoming appointments, etc. what stock infotainment system can do that?
i'd like to bring this back to toyota/lexus' adoption (or not) of apple carplay and android auto.
what models of each brand have apple carplay today? i know none have android auto.
With all due respect, I think we should just change the original title. There's hardly any discussion of the original topic - if there ever was at all. A new thread can be made on toyota vs lexus. The only democratic thing I can think of would be to either migrate all pages after #2 to a new thread, or else the former suggestion, because otherwise it kills the current discussion for no good reason.
nitro, with all due respect, moderators allow a lot of leeway about threads going on and off topic, but you already started another thread about apple carplay and android auto vs built in infotainment systems, and i just put some 'relevant' content there.
the whole digression here about audi virtual cockpit had nothing to do with the subject, and this thread also became a debate about the features and value of AA/AC in general, and i think what has been said is plenty. if there's a different topic you see a need to discuss, start a thread about it.
we merge threads with similar topics, and we try to keep threads in general on topic.
all that aside, this thread is about toyota/lexus adoption (or not) of AA/AC.
if you have any further issue, take it to pm with me or another moderator.

To repeat. Again - I made it clear. His wording is off but hes talking about not being able to have two Car Play supporting Apps run at the same time with the exception of Maps. Go, please try it. Have Pandora on your infotainment screen and then click messages on your phone. You'll notice Pandora will leave your screen on your car and mirror what's on your phone.
Watch from 4:17
Nice. You twisted my words. Here was my FULL quote:
Again - I know you love Apple Car Play and Android Auto. I also can see how good it is to some cars without good infotainment systems or much tech. However - in higher-end luxury cars - it feels like a stop-gap solution. It restricts too much of your own infotainment system. End result - its one or the other. Some people doesn't want to always keep closing Apple Car Play, go back into "car", do what they want, then go back into Apple Car Play. It should be seamless. However - it won't be ever seamless because Car Companies will never allow it.
Do you know what I was referencing? Do you? I was talking about the full integration of CP/AA as the main infotainment system. That's what I was referencing to when I said "car companies will never allow it." Not once in there I said "split screen" and car companies will never allow split screens. Not once I said it in that quote. But yet - here you are using part of my quote to claim I said car companies will never allow split screens. Nice use of picking out words to discredit me. Please - if you are going to discredit someone, use actual facts. Thanks.

Lost all credibility? Because Geko purposely misquoted me to make a point? Lol

As a G90 owner shouldn't they have brought you at least a G80 and not a low spec Hyundai? Genesis is supposed to be distancing themselves from the plebeian family tree.
The headlights on that new Santa Fe are so thin. Kinda cool

My thoughts exactly.

Are those the headlights or just the daytime running lights? I thought the headlights were those recessed units that look like foglights.
