Default Automotive glass

This thread is a new thread but an extension of the Avalon discussion about double pane glass.

LS500 used lamisafe glass on all side windows.
LS500 f sport uses lamisafe glass on all side windows expect the rear quarter window which is temperlite.

Who would think that small window makes a difference? Right.

Looking into things further. Canadian made RX windshields use laminated acoustic glass while Japan made RX-L uses lamipane.

Anyone know if they are the same?

I am so fascinated by these details.

The "lamipane" glass is almost certainly also acoustic...

Ok. So a LS uses lamipane for the front windshield. Lamipane for sides. A GX and LX use lamisafe for the front windshield but lamipane for the sides. ES350 uses lamisafe for front windshield and for side fronts . An RX uses lamipane for windshield but lamisafe for sides.

I think its all just a question of glass brands and what they call it. The key is the word "lami-" which denoted a laminated (double paned) glass.

For instance on the LS460, all the glass is manufactured by Aashi Glass Corp, except the windshield which is Nippon Safety. On all my previous Lexus models ALL the glass was Aashi Glass Corp,.

Does it say lamipane or lamisafe on the windows? What about the rear windshield. LS500 is temperlite.

I am assuming lamisafe and lamipane are two different glasses.

ok that's a surprising and rather bizarrely small difference.

i wonder if the f-sport uses non-laminated glass in the rear quarter to
a) save weight
b) allow more noise into the cabin perhaps from exhaust?
c) save money
d) something else
e) some combo of above
?

Ask and ye shall receive! I went out and took some pics.

So the windshield is Nippon Safety "LAMIPANE", the side windows including the 1/4 windows are Aashi (AGC AUTOMOTIVE) "LAMISAFE" and the rear window is Aashi "TEMPERLITE" (tempered, single pane).

Windshield:

Side Windows:

Rear window:

So riffing into this a little more. I thought maybe "Lamipane" was a type of glass used for Windshields. But here is an Aashi Lexus windshield that says "LAMISAFE":

And then I saw an Aashi Lexus windshield (this is from an LX470, before they started putting "LEXUS" instead of "TOYOTA" on the glass) and it says LAMIPANE! Cant find that pic again

I figure it would the same for that small window in that it would cost less if there were less switching and changing in the design. But, I guess not. Or perhaps in different regions of the world, the LS is temperlite on more than just those windows. I don't know.

Here is a page from Aashi's website about it:

http://www.agc-automotive.com/en/our...lass-lamisafe/

According to them their laminated glass is "Lamisafe"

I'm thinking its just a brand thing, and that "LAMIPANE" and "LAMISAFE" mean the same thing. A google search for lamisafe vs lamipane doesn't turn anything up. Websites which "decode your glass markings" only denote a difference between laminated and tempered glass.

So the LX570 uses lamisafe for the front windshield and lamipane for the front passenger and driver side widows. All others are temperlite. My Corolla uses lamisafe for the front windshield.

This could be the case. However, laminated glass may not necessarily be laminated acoustic glass from what I have seen. GM/Dodge cars specifically differentiate the two. I am assuming there are inherited benefits of sound reduction with lamination, but perhaps it can go further.

All cars today have to use laminated glass for the windshield, its a DOT requirement.

That LX470 pic I found (which I could find it again) was Aashi glass and said "LAMIPANE" but thats 20 years old or so, Aashi may have changed their terminology.

Article about acoustic glass:

https://glassmagazine.com/article/au...iet-revolution

From what I have learned when buying replacement windshields for my Lexus vehicles, ALL laminated Lexus glass is acoustic. Sometimes its denoted on the glass and sometimes not.

I saw that too, but I don't believe its very accurate, for this reason:

Often, the trademark name of the glass is present. This includes Temperlite, Lamisafe, Lamipane, and more.
We know this is not the brand name of the glass, but the type of glass. AGC AUTOMOTIVE, Nippon Safety, Pilkington, etc are the brand names.

I believe they are trademarks of each brand who owns the trademark.
