There is no guaranty that someone travelling at the speed limit -- or lower -- would have missed that accident up ahead. If a driver is slow in responding due to being distracted (cellphone, radio, in a discussion with a passenger in the car, etc.), that slow-travelling car could also have added itself to the wreck.
Agreed. However all that you mention above makes even more risky if the speed the person was driving is increased.
Was doing some test driving last night at 2am on the highway. I was going 55 in a 65. Few cars were on the road but they were all overtaking me and was going about 70mph.
On a long stretch of the highway an Audi decided to overtake me and was going about 70mph. As we were approaching a hill that Audi in front of me had to break really hard because down the hill was a major wreck. The wreck was pretty bad but surprisingly the driver survived. THAT is why I drive at the speed limit.
you should've been going 25 mph, that way you would've had EVEN more time to avoid the wreck

Good post. You bring up some factors that, IMO, not enough drivers take into consideration.
Sulu is correct, of course, that driving the limit (or less) is no guarantee of avoiding an accident, but, still, we get back to the laws of physics....you will have more room for error, and less potential chance of an impact.

......until some jack-a** behind you, busy texting instead of watching the road, plows into your rear end because he or she is going at least twice your speed.

I sure hope that, being 10 below the speed limit, you were in the far right lane. Not even the middle - the far right. Most people would assume something is wrong with your car (or you) if you are going below the speed limit. If I am guessing correctly, you were most likely on 435, where 55 feels like crawling anyway. 65 is a very approrpiate speed for that road. Like I have mentioned before, in KC you can get away with going a bit slower. What's ironic about it is that most of the exit ramps in the area give you more than enough time to slow down even if you wait until you're completely off the highway to start braking, whereas, in Atlanta, where everyone and their grandparents speed, the exit ramps are much shorter. So I find it valuable to have some perspective. Certainly if you don't like going over the speed limit, stick to the Midwest.

LMAO! This is precisely the issue we've been talking about when speed limits are set too low.

So you were going 10 under the speed limit and the Audi was going 5 over the speed limit and both of you fared just fine.

or even more likely, someone with a 1997 Saturn SL-2 so incredibly overwhelmed by the unparalleled beauty of it's sumptuous analog gauges who can't help but keep looking at them, and didn't see the back of a car approaching! ok sorry sorry i had to get that one in lol...

So my brain is a bit weird when it comes to remembering road names. My mind shuts them all out and I just can't remember them. For example, I have no clue(maybe just an inkling) what 435 means and I've been driving for 10 years. Whenever I need to recall a place I would use imagery and locate things base on vicinity. Now I just use google. Its funny because my mom who barely speaks English can recall all of the road names.

Actually the Audi was probably going 15 over. And no, we didn't fare just fine. He almost hit the officer parked on the road and almost ran over the flares. The officer was kinda dumb because he parked too close to the top of the hill where you can't see him until you go down. You're suppose to park on top of the hill. As for me, I just sat back and watched the whole thing. Didn't even have to use my brakes. Didn't even break a sweat.
I had to meet my wife on Sat. at the in-laws, she went up Fri. morning. Good opportunity to dust off the cobwebs from the garage queen and give the Lexus a much needed break from DD duties.
This is the left lane of the NJ Turnpike northbound, Sat. afternoon. There was a Dodge Journey on our a** with Maryland tags, so we moved to the right, and let him pass. We thought in our minds, that car doesn't look like one that would be that great at higher speeds, but you want to go faster than we do, so here you are. Then he got on the a** of the Scat Pack that was in front of us. We probably gave it several car lengths which annoyed the Dodge Journey.
From my observation, if you want to do the speed limit, 65 mph, you are a little out of luck, because even in the far right, you are "too slow" from a subjective point of view. But you have every right to go the speed limit, even imho up to 10 mph below. But that's not a great idea.
p.s. the guy in the Journey appeared to be a senior. We used to find it funny, but now we feel a little concerned if they would still have decent/requisite reflexes or not. Reflexes is likely an area where aging is not very kind.
p.p.s.- my friend was driving

Yes, but that's not necessarily the fault of the posted limit. That's simply drivers failing to pay proper attention to their driving...which can happen at any speed. Today's electronic devices (and I think we can both agree on this) have become complete addictions...yes, even when behind the wheel.

You said he was going 70 in a 65. Thats 5 over, not 15 over.

But those are the realities around which they have to create safer roads. You cant just throw your hands up and say "its all their fault!", you have to deal with the realities of the road.
