interesting car the original q45, it had better performance than even all other 3 cars up there! unfortunately when you make something look so weird it doesn't sell as well. just looking at those 4 photos i'd be like what's that 4th car on the right even doing there if i didn't know what it was.
I'd say its more due to marketing, keep in mind this is the era before internets, you have a really bad ad campaign, your sales really suffer.

Infiniti Q45 ad, WTF????? Its a brand new car, from a brand new brand, and yet you don't even show a picture of the car?? Much less a clip of the car driving down some swoopy two lane road.

Then there is the iconic Lexus LS400 ad, with Mr Smooth Voice. I mean damn, 145mph in 1990 is pretty damn impressive. I've driven my inline six cylinder 1992 SC300 up to 135mph, that was all she had, and that car had 5 gears(manual trans) vs the 4 gears in the automatic LS400.

IMO that is still the benchmark of a true luxury vehicle. What has happened is that, in recent decades, automakers have generally tried to combine luxury and sport into one package, producing sedans that handle better, with nice luxury trim inside, but have lost the soft cushy rides. There are a few of what I would call luxury (or almost true) luxury sedans left today (mostly from Korea) but they are few and far between.

BTW.....you mention the body roll on the Benz in that ad. I've sampled two sedans from that era that probably rolled worse than that....the Buick Roadmaster and the 1Gen Kia Amanti. The 2Gen Amanti was firmed up a little.

I get what you are trying to get at about soft cushy rides, but the drawback is less sport handling and of cars are going to offer 300 or 400hp plus engine options, I think you need the sport part to go along with it. Too soft and floaty would never work in this day and age.

Wow, sweet! I can barely remember the Acura Legend. We were kids, and this guy Johnny E., his really old brother got a job at some new car co. (Acura). No idea what year that would have been, though I do know Lexus came out in fall 1989. But he came home with some really sweet ride one day (original Legend). I also remember at my first job, some big wig had a Legend (not the original).

These car cos. seem to be earth shattering when they launched, and then became mainstream over time...

Thanks! I definitely agree with Aron9000 - Infiniti just didn't have the right marketing plan to take on Lexus.

Here are few more cool ads:

The original LS is a masterpiece. Heck it puts many new cars to shame I'd rather own it than a bunch of brand new models.

I guess I'd argue that the 70's were the bottom of the barrel. New smog requirements, greatly lowered compressions, pre-catalytic converter days. Anybody here have a car that kept on dieseling after turning the key off? I saw some cars that could keep on running for perhaps 30 seconds.
