At the 11 minute mark of the video, it shows exactly my concern with the G70. Cramped 2nd row seating. Who's going to want a ride back there for more than an hour? 3-4 more inches there would be huge.

It has a little more legroom and shoulder room, but the same headroom, as a Lexus IS. I'm 5' 11" and fit in the rear seat behind myself just fine, though I wouldn't be able to stretch out much. I suspect the headroom is hard to judge based on numbers, however, since the rear seat height plays into the effective headroom.

If you need more rear space, the Stinger would be a better choice. I find it interesting that they differentiated the two models the way they did.

since genesis has the g80 as well it didn't make sense to make the g70 nearly as big, plus the g70 is going after the 3, IS, A4, C class competitors.

+1. It's actually really nice that you have your choice of compact sedan, sorta-compact hatch, or midsize sedan between those three. Filling the market niches =

From a practical perspective though, the back seat in the g70 is a LOT smaller than the one in the 3-series. In my E90, with the driver's seat in my ideal position, there's about 6" between the seatback and the front of the seat bottom cushion. Not enough for a person to sit, but I can move forward enough so that my wife or son can sit behind me, and still be somewhat comfortable in the front. The outgoing F30 generation has 2 inches more rear seat room than my E90 does, so they might be able to fit in the back without me moving up at all.

By contrast, when I set the driver's seat for myself in the G70, the seatback is almost touching the lower cushion of the rear seat. Maybe 1.5". When I move it up as far as I can while still being able to drive, my son still can't come anywhere near close to getting in behind me. I'd describe it as a sedan version of the 911--the back seats are only there to keep the insurance rates down, and provide convenient storage for a backpack.

The G70 looks sufficiently decent and adjusts the Genesis lineup. All things considered, they can't get their CUV and SUV to showcase soon enough. That is the place the consumer intrigue and volume is at the present time.

^^^ Yes, market segmentation. You cover off your CUV segment but keep interesting vehicles like the G70 there too. Young buyers want a sporty car instead of a boxy crossover. So glad Lexus is keeping the IS around. That is beautifully styled vehicle that stayed true to its handling and steering feel balance. BMW only fixed its dozy steering in the new G20.

Genesis G70 Getting New 2.5T Engine to Replace 2.0T

Hyundai let slip to C/D that its new turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four from the Sonata N-Line will eventually make its way into the Genesis G70 sports sedan. This engine will replace the current G70 2.0-liter turbo-four, which serves as the base engine and sits under the more powerful twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 in the lineup. The engine transplant is likely to be part of the G70's mid-cycle facelift, which should come either for the 2021 or 2022 model year.

The new engine should provide a significant power boost for the four-cylinder G70, as 2.5T engine makes 290 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque in the Sonata, improvements of 38 hp and 50 lb-ft over the current 2.0T. But the bad news is that it might mean the end of the G70 2.0T's available six-speed manual transmission, as the 2.5T in the Sonata mates only with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Genesis says the manual has accounted for only around 4 percent of G70 2.0T sales in the U.S. so far, so we wouldn't be surprised to see it dropped from the lineup when this new engine arrives.

Expect to hear more official information about the G70's new powertrain sometime next year as we get closer to the launch of the updated model, which is also likely to benefit from tweaked styling and new technology features.
Nice upgrade, in my opinion.

Agreed. The base engine, power-wise, wasn't too bad but not competitive with the obviously-underrated German competition.

3.3 should be replaced with the new 3.5L and also a DCT. Can't wait for that as it should land just in time for my upgrade!

As for this 2.5L, are there any other 4 cylinders producing this much power in this class yet? Can only think of the Jaguar/Land Rover engine and the Volvo engine.
