Not trying to defend the M5, but I curious to know if the car has reached 1200 miles and the break-in mode was removed for this drag race...

C&D just did a comparison test that included the M5 and AMG E63. In all of the tests the two were nearly identical or with the M5 about 1/10th quicker. 1/4 mile 10.9 @129 vs. 11.0 @128 and 0-60 2.8 sec. vs. 2.9 seconds.

I would choose the M5, without a second thought.

How nonsensical. If someone is buying a $100k+ sport sedan to go drag racing, they've wasted their money and should have just bought a Demon instead. How about some form of testing that uses that big round thing right in front of you?

In the comparison test mentioned above the CTS-V was quickest thru the slalom followed by the M5. On the skid pad the CTS-V was quickest followed by the AMG. In the 70-0 braking test the M5 stopped the shortest followed by the CTS-V, AMG/Panamera.

2.8, 2.9? I'm old enough to remember when 5.9 was ridiculous. So when my 4 y.o. is old enough to drive, he's going to be in a car that can go 0-60 in like 1.3 sec?

Scotty Kilmer would say these are not good cars to spend your money on. Please reset your autotempest search to 1994 Celicas for under $400.

Well, I guess it goes without saying that there's something these cars offer that a Demon doesn't. For one: all-wheel-drive

These cars are for bragging rights and most ppl have already decided if they want the Benz or BMW.
I personally dont like the looks of either.

M5 Competition Pack is around the corner and will have even more power and better handling.
Hard to pick against M5 if u need a sport sedan in the $125-135k range.

I think its pretty clear that BMW really doesn´t care about thins kind of tests anymore. First of all the car still has "only" 600 hp ( in Europe ) and so did one version of the previous M5 . Its 12 hp less than the Merc and it has even less torque. The new M5 has a larger engine ( 4,4 vs 4 ) than the Merc so they could easily add another 100 hp to this M5 engine, but apparently they did not.

Its pretty much the same with the new M760i vs Mercedes S63 AMG S, its a 6,6 liter biturbo V12 and they simply didnt care to tune to more than 610 hp. There would be no problem at all to tune it to about 750-800 hp, but they did not.

LOL - Yes BMW just gave up!
Thats why they went through all the trouble of developing AWD system for this new M5 so it can put down the power.
Car and Driver just got it to do 2.8sec which was the quickest time ever for any sedan.

Also there is an even faster Comp Pack version coming next year with 625hp!
I hope you realize these power figures are really underrated.

As far as the M760i - its not a full on M car.
BMW has never reall had a true answer to the Sclass AMG cars. The V12 it had is all about top end power but its Mperformance model not full on M7.

My wife and I drove the E65 Alpina B7, and she literally said, "I don't see anything at all special about this car." I showed her the plaque inside, and she was still unimpressed. I just wanted to make sure we didn't hit any potholes as the rims were like $4,100 each, which is silly...
