Default Gifting a vehicle versus selling for a $1 in Texas

Has anyone or know the difference between gifting a vehicle to someone versus selling it for a $1 in a Texas? Are there any associated sales tax and fees etc? I’m trying to get an idea which is the better route to go in order to save money for the recipient. Thanks!

Not really sure in Texas. I was recently given a truck. When I transferred the registration to my name, I just had to write in 0$ in the sale price and a letter from my in-laws (who gave me the truck) stating that they were giving it to me as a gift. I did not have to pay any taxes, just the registration fees. This is in Washington state.

Wish I had this problem....the closest I have come was I was gonna give my dad a brand new Maxima back in 1999, but I didn't follow through. Would love to be on the receiving end, maybe in another life...I know where he lives in CT, doesn't matter because they have to pay a yearly tax, and it is based on the vehicle's value, so imagine how many 2017 BMWs would be suddenly $1 in that case...

In Texas, one has to pay tax on a minimum presumptive assigned value based on the vehicle make and year in addition to the local fees. Visit the link below the Texas Dept of Motor Vehicle.

you cant sell it to someone for $1 anymore, they have a database of vehicle values so you cant be sneaky on the taxes. Gift only works for direct relative.

I don't know. But what I do know is that internet forums are a horrible place to get tax advice.
