The Amazing Evolution of Lexus' Spindle Grille
By Brett Foote

Designing and constructing a car grille might not seem like that big a deal. But when it comes to Lexus, it's an incredibly complicated and fascinating process!

No offense, but I see little point in posting another thread on the spindle-grilles. Most of us in Car Chat have pretty much talked this issue to death.....and I don't think any of us are going to change our minds. With few exceptions, we either like it or hate it.

ok, many posts now deleted - this is about the evolution of the spindle grill, not whether it's good or bad, or what is the best looking lexus ever.

perhaps you've missed the point, the link to the slide show is about how the spindle grills are made and is quite interesting.

Default Spindle Me This

I hope Jeff Bracken is on the forum...here's the solution: leave the aggressive, edgy spindle grille on the aggressive, edgy models (IS, RC, LC, GS-F). Offer a less aggressive, less edgy grille on the other models (LS, ES, GS). An alternative is to offer a grille option for EACH model, which would raise the cost of each model and decrease Lexus profits. Lexus must retain its current customer base, while at the same time attracting a younger crowd. Easier said then done.

Very good idea.

Good design is good design - see Alfa, Jaguar, Porsche, Mazda, Aston Martin.
It doesn't need a gimmick like "spindle" grille or Acura "beak."

Lexus needs to hire a good car designer PERIOD.
LC is a great design direction but the new LS was a miss imo.
They need a theme for the whole car not just an outrageous grille.

I agree with you! Brand identity is one thing but the off the charts SPINDLE should mot be the central identifier.

^this is nonsense and I don’t agree. Aston Martin does nothing for me and neither does any Porsche except a boxter convertible. Alfa is not really cool and Mazda is far not that interesting to look at eother inside or out. I do really like Jaguar I must say.

^
The majority of people and respected designers think Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo have some of the most beautiful and timeless designs ever made.
The 911 is a masterpiece and the other Porsche models from the front or back are instantly recognizable as nothing other but a Porsche as they have some 911 elements.

Have you seen the new Mazda SUVs or the Mazda3 or 6 or Miata - all are great designs.

Prove it. This idea that science -- "majority of people", "respected designers" -- can be used to prove the beauty of a car is a fallacy. It is an attempt to intimidate those who do not agree with the poster's opinion. Judgement of beauty is just that, an opinion, not a fact.

How anyone can call the sour pucker face of an Alfa Romeo beautiful is beyond me.

I find that the style of the Mazda3 hatchback has become a caricature. Take some features, such as the long hood and strong rear end, and over-emphasize them (as a caricaturist or political cartoonist would do) so that the car now looks like a dog back on its haunches, defecating. That is not beautiful!

And the overly bottom-heavy, gunslit-for-windows style of the Mazda CX-3? Come on, how can anyone find it attractive?

I thought about posting some examples but I did not want to insult the dignity of the members.

Could care less about Aston Martin. Never have. Alfa Romeo does nothing. Mazda is a flop. In Canada they have an unlimited km warranty now. The interiors while might be well built, they feel too closed in and cramped compared to what Toyota and Honda offer.

You are right. Beauty is just an opinion

Thumbs down

I look at that styling and all I can think is are the exhausts tips big enough to stick my head in?
