Default VW Arteon

Volkswagen is working on a more powerful six-cylinder version of its forthcoming Arteon fastback sedan. The prototype features a 3.0-liter turbocharged VR6 that makes 409 horsepower, CarThrottle reports.

VW's product line spokesman Martin Hube told the CarThrottle that VW has combined the more powerful engine with its Haldex four-wheel-drive system. "This is a real agile, powerful car," he said.

The Arteon midsize hatchback is Volkswagen's upmarket successor to the CC that it unveiled in March in Geneva. The regular version will be offered with three diesels and three gasoline engines that top out at the 276-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine with a seven-speed DSG transmission, with the top-tier version getting 4Motion all-wheel drive.

The VR6 would presumably fit with Volkswagen's performance R division, where it just updated its Golf R and is testing a T-Roc R crossover under new boss and motorsports veteran Jost Capito, according to Motor Authority.

The standard Arteon went on sale earlier this year in Germany but will go on sale next year as a 2019 model. Asked whether the VR6 will make it stateside, VW spokesman Mark Gillies said only, "We are bringing in the Arteon with the four-cylinder turbo."

Interested to see how they price the Arteon relative to the Kia Stinger as well as the Audi A5 Sportback.

Much rather have the Audi Sportback, especially if that is the top trim interior pictured there.

Default 2019 Volkswagen Arteon revealed for North America

Volkswagen is gearing up for the flagship Arteon's U.S.-market release. The replacement for the swoopily styled CC saloon, the sharper Arteon is positioned to go a touch more upmarket, even if isn't reaching towards the sumptuous heights where the Phaeton once resided. The Arteon was unveiled for Europe a year ago in Geneva, and the time has now come for the saloon to make it westwards as a 2019 model.

The only engines available for the Arteon anywhere are four-cylinder affairs, and the most powerful iteration of the 2.0 TSI is the sole option for American Arteons, offering 268 horsepower in American spec. An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Arteon, but it can be ordered with 4Motion all-wheel-drive if required.

The specification levels will be SE, SEL and SEL Premium, and the top-of-the-line versions will feature such options as the Digital Cockpit cluster, panoramic sunroof, a massage function on the driver seat and Dynaudio premium audio. Full LED headlights and adaptive damping are standard.

VW's NA CEO Hinrich J. Woebcken says "This car is the spiritual successor to the CC, but it is bolder and faster. Arteon has the style and performance of a luxury Gran Turismo for about the price of a fully loaded midsize sedan." No pricing information is available at the time of writing, but the price for a base car has been estimated at $37,000.

Here's a Euro market comparison between the two.

Great comparison video!! My main takeaway from that video though, is why did they even build the Arteon in the first place???? Seems like VW is doing an old GM trick, competing with itself.

It replaces the VW CC in the States. Not sure it will be enough but this does look better IMO.

Overall, going to be a tough sell. The new Jetta has a more dynamically styled dash than this. I do like the bodyshape though. It pulls off the rear droop better than all others. Also note the A4 starts around the same price.

One thing this and many future VW's will need is a grille surround. Just having it melt into the headlights with no definition is sloppy and lacking.

Another passat derivative like the CC? It looks nice for its class, interior is too audi like with the screen and vent design. Looks like they are using the same infotainment software too.

How would you guys rank the Stinger, Arteon, and A5 Sportback by design?

This VW looks outstanding. I have always thought VW has a slightly premium over Toyota or Honda and the mainstream brands. Not sure if true.

When I saw the Areton, I thought it was an Audi at first. It's a good move for VW. The VW will sell more than the Stinger, though.
