U.S. October new vehicle sales seen down 4 pct on year: J.D. Power and LMC

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-autos/u-s-october-new-vehicle-sales-seen-down-4-pct-on-year-j-d-power-and-lmc-idUSKBN1CV20A

October likely fell close to 4 percent from the same month in 2016, though automakers’ sales were buoyed by replacement of storm-damaged vehicles and record-high consumer discounts, industry consultants J.D. Power and LMC Automotive said on Thursday.

October U.S. new vehicle sales will be about 1.32 million units, a drop of almost 3.7 percent from 1.37 million units a year earlier, the consultancies said.

The forecast was based on the first 17 selling days of October. Automakers will release U.S. sales results for the month on Nov. 1.

Major automakers’ U.S. new vehicle sales climbed to a monthly high for the year in September as consumers replaced flood-damaged cars after Hurricane Harvey hit southeast Texas in late August.[nL2N1ME0SD]

The seasonally adjusted annualized rate for October will be 17.6 million vehicles, down more than 1 percent from 17.8 million units in the same month in 2016, the consultancies said.

Retail sales to consumers, which do not include multiple fleet sales to rental agencies, businesses and government, were also set to decline more than 4 percent in October.

U.S. sales of new cars and trucks hit a record high of 17.55 million units in 2016. But a saturated market, thanks partly to a glut of nearly new used vehicles, has forced automakers to hike discounts to entice consumers to buy.

Consumer discounts hit a monthly record of $3,901, above the previous record of $3,835 set in October 2016.

“While incentives have declined from the record high set last month, the need to reduce inventory could push spending to a new all-time high level in the final months of the year,” said Thomas King, J.D. Power’s senior vice president for data and analytics.

Discounts as a percentage of the manufacturer’s recommended sale price hit 10.5 percent in October, as they have for 15 of the last 16 months. Consumer discounts of more than 10 percent are considered unhealthy for automakers in the long term as they undermine resale values.

Despite the lofty consumer discounts, the average new vehicle sold in October spent 75 days in inventory. This was the longest since July 2009, during the height of the Great Recession.

For the 1st Time Since 2011, GM’s Retail Market Share Tops 17 Percent for 3 Consecutive Months

DETROIT — General Motors (NYSE: GM) today reported 252,813 deliveries in the United States in October.
  • Pickup deliveries totaled 84,902 units, up 9 percent year over year, led by the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.
  • Crossover deliveries totaled 82,235 units, up 12 percent year over year, driven by the highest October sales ever for five different models: the Chevrolet Equinox and Traverse, the GMC Acadia and the Buick Encore and Enclave.
  • Combined Cadillac SRX and XT5 sales were up 17 percent.
  • The Chevrolet Bolt EV and Buick Encore had their best months ever.
  • Combined Commercial and Government deliveries were up 10 percent year over year, and 11 percent calendar year to date.
Selling-day adjusted sales were up 2 percent. Total sales were down 2 percent, reflecting lower passenger cars deliveries and one fewer selling day year over year.

Retail Share Momentum

Exceptionally strong crossover deliveries at Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac helped the company achieve an estimated retail market share of 17 percent or more for the third consecutive month. The last time GM delivered three consecutive months at or above a 17 percent retail share was July-September 2011.

Three crossovers reported massive year-over-year retail sales increases for the month: the Chevrolet Traverse was up 59 percent, the Chevrolet Equinox was up 22 percent and the Buick Enclave was up 75 percent. The GMC Sierra pickup also posted a large 23 percent increase in retail sales.

“We are heading into the fourth quarter with good momentum, thanks to a strong U.S. economy and very strong pickup and crossover sales. In fact, Chevrolet and GMC have some of the fastest-turning crossovers in the industry,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “The all-new Chevrolet Equinox is off to a great start and we could have sold even more if we had more available. We also see tremendous upside with the launches of the 2018 GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. They are arriving in showrooms at the same time consumer confidence is at its highest level since 2000. Small business optimism has also stayed very high since last fall, and that bodes well for pickup and van sales.”

Customer demand for trucks and crossovers, combined with incentive spending discipline, is driving strong average transaction prices (ATP) for GM vehicles. GM’s October ATPs, which are net of incentive spending, were more than $36,000, about $1,000 per unit higher than the 3rd quarter average.

The GMC brand, which grew total and retail sales during the month, had its highest ATPs ever, driven by the success of Denali models, which reached 30 percent of retail sales.

Supplemental Data
  • GM reduced month-end inventory from September and is on track to close 2017 with significantly fewer vehicles in stock than in December 2016.
  • Daily rental sales in 2017 are expected to be down about 50,000 units year over year.
  • GM’s October incentive spending as a percent of ATP was an estimated 13.5 percent, according to JD Power PIN estimates, down from the third quarter estimate of 13.7 percent. Spending is down about one percentage point from September.
General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) has leadership positions in the world's largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. Cars Take Lead Role in American Honda October Sales Gains
Nov 1, 2017 - TORRANCE, Calif.
  • Civic leads strong month for Honda car sales, setting new October record with 15 percent gain
  • All-new 2018 Accord helps America's best-selling midsize car to strong month
  • Honda Pilot gains 18.5 percent, supported by increased production volume
  • Acura MDX has strong month with sales of 5,287 based on increased production
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported October sales of 127,353 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 0.9 percent vs. October 2016. With strong sales of passenger cars, Honda Division reported an increase of 1.2 percent on sales of 114,655. Acura Division sales were down slightly at 1.3 percent on sales of 12,698 vehicles.

Honda

Honda delivered another strong month with passenger car sales playing the lead role. Civic outpaced the market again with another double-digit gain while Accord, strengthened by the debut of the all-new 2018 model, gained 4.7 percent in October. Increased production of Pilot also paid dividends as sales climbed 18.5 percent for the month. Elsewhere in the truck lineup, tight supplies of key model trims checked sales growth.
  • Honda car sales gained 6.3 percent in October, with 60,283 units sold.
  • Civic sales climbed 15 percent on sales of 30,319 for the month, a new October record.
  • Accord posted 26,740 sales, up 4.7 percent with the debut of the all-new 2018 model, with 2.0T and Hybrid variants yet to launch.
  • Pilot sales gained notably in October for the second straight month, with sales up 18.5 percent on sales of 10,285.
"With key competitors resorting to aggressive discounting and heavy incentives even on new models, Honda is riding the growing momentum of a robust product lineup boosted by the all-new Accord," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president of the Automobile Division of American Honda. "As the rollout of the new 2018 Accord continues, we're focused on a strong finish to 2017 and a 4th consecutive year of record sales."

Acura

Acura sales were led by MDX, which gained again as it benefitted from higher production volume with the complete shift of production to the East Liberty Plant in Ohio. And while sedan and RDX sales were challenged by the aggressive incentives by competitors, the NSX had its best sales month since going on sale in 2016 with a 30 percent gain in October.
  • MDX sales were up 4.7 percent in October, with 5,287 units sold.
  • RLX sales are climbing, helped more significantly by the RLX Sport Hybrid as it continues to gain recognition. RLX gained 6.5 percent on sales of 99 units.
  • ILX sales were up 2.6 percent on sales of 1,025 vehicles.
"We're pleased to see the higher inventory from the move of Acura MDX production quickly result in stronger sales," said Jon Ikeda, vice president & general manager of the Acura division. "With the redesigned RLX ready to hit the market in the coming days sporting a strong expression of the new Acura design direction, we'll look to close 2017 with stronger sedan sales."

1 new 2012 LFA delivery in October 2017

15 amazing Ford GT deliveries, looks like they are ramping up toward the goal of 20 per month.

87 new NSX deliveries spurred by an incentive of as much as $30k per car to reduce 2017 inventory. The incentive supposedly ends in November so expect another good month then back to tepid. 2018s are expected to be predominantly customer ordered cars.

35 R8 deliveries

245 AMG GT deliveries spells success!

Q50 at 2791 did better than IS at 1972 and GS at 558 combined

Q60 at 909 is similar to RC at 828

LC seems at a stable level, 219
