You were lucky. I remember the same thing happened when I was in college. I was driving and heard a very weird sound and car was riding rough. I thought it could be the brakes or engine so pulled over and noticed it was loose lug nuts, I think it happened twice. What is also bad is when shops often over torque lug nuts or oil drain plugs to where they are next to impossible to take off, you will be screwed if you have a flat and need to put on the spare.

Used to work at Enterprise Rent-a-Car in my younger days and we'd get a surprising number of people renting cars because of oil changes gone awry....ranging from Jiffy Lube, Walmart to those quick Valvoline oil changes. Most of them were didn't put any-enough oil during the oil changes which usually translated to severe engine reconstruction/new engine installs. One car being serviced @ Walmart oil change back then the customer claimed tipped over when the lift was going up.

That's why I buy a new car every 5,000 miles...changing the oil is too risky.

We laugh at this but it also happened to my buddy with a Dodge. They're not the only ones who are that bad, although they were exposed and I think you can still find YouTubes where they didn't perform any work at all yet charged customers. This is just one thing I have to DIY on all our cars, too much incentive to cheat, and plus, full synth at Walmart is quite inexpensive, and they even have Castrol Edge Euro for German cars.

Rental cars are funny, a long time ago I was a big shot so I had to rent the big car. It was a Chevy Caprice and it only had 8 miles when we picked it up. We drove it up to Montréal and two mishaps occurred. First, we parked it on Jeanne-Mance and all 4 wheel covers were stolen. I actually felt bad, because the car was brand spanking new, and by now, it had about 300 miles. Next, we took some back roads in Québec, got lost. I tried to do a K turn and the rear tires wound up in a ditch. My buddy went door-to-door asking if someone could help, but nobody spoke English. I was getting really worried but luckily he discovered they spoke Andrew Jackson.

When we got back to the airport, I told Alamo I'm sorry the wheel covers were stolen so I'll have them replaced as AMEX should cover them. The clerk goes, what wheel covers? I say the ones that were on the car when we rented it. Are you sure it had wheel covers? Yes, the car only had 8 miles on it when we got it, it was brand new. You're sure it had wheel covers when you picked it up from us? Maybe you're right, they weren't there when we picked up the car. Now you guys probably have an idea where my Roadmaster LT1 fantasies come from.
