most, probably no, but car makers have other reasons for going from 8 to 10, mainly fuel economy i expect, or more linear responsiveness at any speed and rpm.

I did watch review on the LC500, biggest complaint was that the gears are so useless as you are doing 100mph in fourth gear or something like that. I believe it was Motor Trend that made this claim.
welll motor trend would. but seriously, maybe in manual shifting you can get to 100 in 4th, but the car wouldn't be very happy doing it. now if you want to talk about useless, how about the 7 speed manuals that are out there... talk about a rowing machine.

As for the 4Runner, it's got a 5 speed and a six cylinder engine that dates back a while, but Toyota is selling them in record numbers so I am sure most people can't tell or perhaps don't care how many speeds it has got.
i agree the buyers don't know, can't tell or don't care.
