I've never talked to anyone with a GX that didn't love it. Even those that traded one in, wished they still had it. I looked at a 4 Runner, and liked it. It's been ready for a thorough refresh inside and out for several years, though. I might actually consider a Highlander, based on what I've read, but I've never actually looked at one in person. The new one is supposed to be greatly improved. I drove a CRV my sister bought, and was pretty impressed, but I'm just not a Honda fan. Long story. Hyundai is building some nice cars nowadays. My neighbor bought a Asante are a few months ago, and loves it. Going the other way (more expensive), I sure like the looks of the Jag SUV, but I know nothing about them. I've never heard much positive about the reliability of the German SUVs, and they're expensive to fix. They do drive pretty nicely. I wouldn't even look at any American cars. Fords we're looking pretty strong a few years ago, but negative reports about build quality and reliability seem to be increasingly common.

its all relative, though. And every manufacturer has the ability to build a gem or a lemon. I'd take the chart Freds430 posted, and start at the top. Go down the list of manufacturers until you find an SUV you like, and be happy with it.

In the end, I'm a Lexus fan. Well designed, reliable, excellent fit and finish, and I love the paint. If only I didn't have to deal with the dealers.

 

OP, I'm not sure what you're looking for in your next SUV or what your constraints are, but I'd easily recommend the GX or Cayenne if the price point is right. The Macan is a great choice too (I believe it shares a platform with the Q5), but based off your NX comment it would probably be too small. If you're on a budget the 4runner can't be beat!! GX for luxury, 4runner for value and Cayenne if you want something different. I recently test drove the Cayenne and GX. Oddly enough I felt our 4runner limited was smoother. The Cayenne has a firm suspension, but the power was nice.
Take it for what it's worth: The jeep ride comfort is poor. Land Rover/ Jaguar isn't necessarily known for their reliability. The LX drives like a boat.

You don't mention size requirements or your needs. In my case, I have 11 MDX and looking for replacement. I wanted to like the RX, but need more cargo space (but don't want full size like Tahoe, LX, etc). I really like the F-Pace and Q5, also the Range Rover Sport, but again, need more cargo space. I have narrowed down to fully loaded MDX or QX60, as well as the new Land Rover Discovery (I am conservative financially and just don't see added value for Q7, XC90, etc--and having trouble justifying Discovery). One frustrating thing re cargo, is that there is less cargo space in 17 MDX and QX60 than in my 11 MDX (not only in cubic feet, but golf clubs fit very comfortable across cargo area behind second row in 11 MDX, but just barely fit in 2017 models).

On smaller side I would look at F-Pace, Q5, RDX, Range Rover Evoque or Velar. Mid-size: MDX, QX60, and if $$ no object Q7, XC90, X5, Porsche, & Range Rover. As an aside, since Tata Motors bought Jag and Land Rover, they have upgraded manufacturing process and reliability has been greatly improved.

 

If you're willing to shift downwards, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is a pretty fun drive

 

If I were in your shoes, I'd be checking out the new Q5. Refined, modern, stylish, and rock solid. Audi has stepped up their reliability too. Also on the list would be a Hyundai Santa Fe. Offered in many combinations, turbo or V6 power, up-to-date styling, and good reliability. Also very affordable. Grab one of those and you can take a cruise around the world with money left over. Don't always have to have a prestigious name to have a quality SUV. New CRV and facelifted RAV4 are also well built and engineered.

The low frequency of Lexus GX/LX recommendations, from Lexus owners, on a Lexus forum is interesting.
I agree there are too many choices... but I'm glad there are.

In the end, I went with a 2015 GX Lux, but really like Jeeps and the German options... just jot the reliability/costs to own/maintain.

You are on the right track, but I like the LX and Macan S obviously. I traded a NX for a Macan S because it actually does feel roomier in the two front seats. The Macan seats are super comfortable also. NX was GREAT! But did feel a little tight in the front seats. I find the LX to drive better on the freeway than my GX, but my GX was a 2011 so they may drive different now. Brakes feel smoother also. GX, LX, Macan, Cayenne have really good resale value and reliability. Just my $ .02

 

Right. I agree. But can anyone tell the difference between 8 or 10 speeds. I did watch review on the LC500, biggest complaint was that the gears are so useless as you are doing 100mph in fourth gear or something like that. I believe it was Motor Trend that made this claim.

As for the 4Runner, it's got a 5 speed and a six cylinder engine that dates back a while, but Toyota is selling them in record numbers so I am sure most people can't tell or perhaps don't care how many speeds it has got.
