Abarth will inject the Fiat 124 Spider with 200 HP

Multiple choices are good...
Whether or not you were impressed by Fiat’s redesign of Mazda’s new MX-5 Miata, also known as the Fiat 124 Spider, your ears might perk up when they hear that Abarth is already working on a mightier version.
Not even a full week after the Italian automaker revealed its new roadster at the LA Auto Show, rumors of a hotter version by its in-house tuning division, Abarth, have already surfaced. With the sale date of the Fiat 124 still about a year off, there’s still plenty of time for these rumors to be proven or disproven, but the initial word about a more hardcore variant is very good news indeed. Accompanying this rendering by Omniauto.it are some performance specifications dug up by Piston Heads. The publication reports that the Abarth iteration will pack the same 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as the normal 124, but will be tuned from its current 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque to a healthier 200+ horses.
With only about 2,200 pounds to lug around, a 200-plus hp sports car will be a de facto enthusiasts dream … that is until Mazda gets around to building its rumored Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata.

I think the writer talks about ND Mazdaspeed Miata. Hopefully, Mazda utilizes 2.0L Skyactiv Turbo for its Mazdaspeed.
Edit: I would go AVO turbo ND Miata simply because I don't trust Mazda putting anything better than Torsen LSD, clutch that can only hold 250hp, and same other bits from Club trim. Rather get a bone stock Sport and build it up.

best way to make a reliable Fiat.......use a Mazda
All jokes aside the HP will be welcome and Im sure there is room in the balance of the Miata chassis for more power.

Not sure if I like the design better than the Miata or not.
I know one thing, I HATE all that boy racer crap they've put on the Abarth, with the flat black hood, red mirrors, ridiculously oversized for the car Abarth badges. If you can buy it with a normal color scheme, I might be sold.
Also, that 6.8 second 0-60 time they quote is really slow. A 2.0 liter engine Miata does 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. Hopefully that is a VERY conservative number, as it should be A LOT faster for a car with 200hp weighing 2300lbs
It should sound amazing, here's the same engine in a 500 Abarath. Yes that is stock exhaust, and if you've ever heard one in person you'll swear it has the loudest factory exhaust in any sort of "normal" car

Anyways, it should be faster than that, somehow the numbers aren't adding up. The 2.0 Miata is pretty darn quick anyways, 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, quarter mile in 14.6@95mph. The Abarth should be running 13 second et's with a good driver. Just for reference a Honda S2000 does 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and the quarter mile in 14.1@97mph

He quoted a 0-62(0 to 100km/h) time of 6.8 seconds for the Abarth in that video, which makes it no faster than the 2.0 Miata.

Also remember this is EU spec, US spec will have more hp just like regular 124.

Also I've been kind of shopping around for this type of car. Can't afford a new Miata at 30k, but can afford a used one. Kind of split if I want to spend $7,000 on a perfect NB Miata or spend about double that on a Honda S2000. Don't want an NC Miata, they're too expensive, ugly IMO, and don't provide any performance advantage over the NB in my book.
Anyways, getting back on point, I test drove an S2000 yesterday. What a machine The engine in that thing, 16 years later, is still a work of art. Absolutely screams and makes great power. Right when its time to shift in a normal car, that thing just takes off and screams to 9000rpm. Handling is telepathic like a Miata as well, plus I think the styling still looks fresh.
My point is I'm thinking a used S2000 might still be a better car than a new Miata or Fiat 124 Abarth. At least I've never driven anything like it, the way it revs is just crazy.

5.9 0-60 with a clutch dump is real world applicable and pretty darn fast, especially for a car with only 160hp.
