Hyundai Motor Reveals Name Of New Global Sub-compact SUV: 'Creta'

- Creta is the first sub-compact SUV model to be developed by Hyundai Motor
- Global launch will start in India, in second half of 2015

June 2, 2015 - Hyundai Motor Company has today announced the name of its first sub-compact SUV: 'Creta'. The global roll-out of this all-new model will start in the second half of 2015 in India.

The name 'Creta' derives primarily from the name for Crete, the largest of the Greek islands. Situated in the Mediterranean Sea, Crete was the focal point for Greece's global prowess in trade and culture, in its heyday connecting Europe, Asia and Africa. Creta will be an influential global model for the Hyundai Motor brand in one of the fastest-growing vehicle segments, helping the company to reach out to many more consumers in new and established international markets.

Consistent with the core concepts underpinning Hyundai Motor's Modern Premium brand direction – SIMPLE, CREATIVE, CARING – the 'Creta' name is simple and easy to remember. Pronunciation of Creta deliberately evokes welcome similarities with the term 'creative', and draws on positive associations with the Mediterranean island of Crete, which is famed for combining a relaxed and tranquil environment with a vibrant, energetic approach to outdoor activities.

If HR-V, CX-3, Trax, Renegade and Juke gather more steam, Hyundai could potentially bring the 'Creta' Stateside. CUVs are all the rage right now

Hyundai probably saw the 6,000+ HR-V sold in 15 days and was like "QUICK RELEASE SOMETHING! A NAME, LOGO, ANYTHING"

Would loved to have seen them bring the ix25 SUV here. I'd be all over that if in the market.

Between that and the nicely reviewed CX-3 I'd tend to agree

Looks like a taller Kia Soul with the blacked out A-pillar

Isn't the Qashqai related to the Rogue?

The new Rogue is actually the new X-trail in Europe, so its larger than the Qashqai.

Oh, gotcha.

Hmm, interesting there is room for the Qashqai or a slightly larger (maybe up to 175.0in) Nissan CUV

Nissan Juke - 162.4in
Nissan Qashqai - 169.9in
Nissan X-Trail / Rogue - 182.7in / 182.8in
Nissan Murano - 192.0in

Interesting. That may (?) be the platform for the so-called (rumored) AWD Soul.

The whole front end and grille, though, are different, and the D-pillar had a markedly different shape than the Soul. But, yes, it could easily come from the same platform.

Yes.....the Rogue is essentially the North American version of the Qashqai. Older versions of the Rogue here are known as the Rogue Select, and, for a while, were still sold alongside the newer redesigned Rogue.

Hyundai Creta Preview

India is today one of the fastest markets for compact SUVs prompting manufacturers to enter the fray with vehicles of all sizes and shapes. One of the chief entrants, among all the players, is Hyundai with its new Creta compact crossover. The vehicle has already been launched in the Chinese market as the ix25 and has been spotted testing in India on multiple occasions.
Exterior
The Hyundai Creta looks like a smaller version of the Santa Fe SUV. While it gets a pretty similar external design, what is different is the front bumper which appears to be a vertically stacked unit as compared to the more round ones on the Santa Fe. A majority of the vertical shape comes from the design of the fog lamps. It also appears that the headlights stand out a tad bit more as compared to the Santa Fe. The side profile of the Creta is the same as the Santa Fe which means the stance is forward leaning with flared wheel arches. The rear roofline sharply tapers as it connects with the tail lamps.
At the rear, the South Korean automaker has given the Creta a vertically stacked design with each part appearing like a separate section. The first part goes from the spoiler to the base of glass while the second section is from a ridge line at the centre of the hatch door to just above the number plate slot. The loading lip and the black bumper form section three of the stack. Wrap around tail lamps and a silver-coloured bash plate complete the appearance of the rear section.
Interior
The interior of the Creta will be exactly the same as that of the India-spec Verna sedan right down to the overall layout of various items in the cabin. We believe that the India-spec car will get beige interiors with a feature list for the top-spec model that is expected to include a touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, power windows, electrically adjustable OVRMs, rear AC vents and at least one optional variant with extra safety features.
The boot is expected to be quite large and roomy with at least 400 litres of storage space. It seems possible that Hyundai may just offer jump seats for the third row in a bid to increase the number of seats offered in the vehicle. We also believe that the top-spec diesel and petrol will get the option of leather seats.
Engine and gearbox
The Creta will be offered with the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines while the only diesel option will be the 1.6-litre four cylinder unit from the Verna. Gearbox options are expected include a five-speed manual, six-speed manual as well as a four-speed AT all sending power to the front wheels. ABS, EBD and traction are expected to be offered in the top-spec variants only.

Price and competition
We expect that Creta will be priced in the range of Rs 7 lakh to Rs 13 lakh where it will compete with the Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport as well as the Mahindra Scorpio.

So, if this is true, the ix25 is the Creta.

1 lakh = 100,000 rupees
1 rupee ~ 0.02 USD (2 cents)
1 lakh = 100,000 * 0.02 = $2000

7 lakh = $14,000
13 lakh = $26,000

Forecast price of Creta in India is US$14,000 to US$26,000.

Yeah, they love it in Britain. TOP GEAR magazine has done a number of articles on that vehicle's popularity.

It does offer a generally well-made, small flexible SUV at a decent price, which explains much of its appeal. I know more than one person who has bought the U.S.-market versions (Rogue and Rogue-Select) simply because of a lower average price than the RAV-4 or CR-V. But the CR-V, at least in the U.S., seems to have the strongest addicting power of all.
