Default Ugly? New Ram pickup joins odd grille list

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/...ugly/24688053/

In the month since it first made its appearance, the 2015 Ram Laramie Limited has attracted more than its share of attention in the pickup truck world for a single feature: its weird grille.

What makes the new version of the super-deluxe pickup strange is a pair of holes on either side of the grille that look almost like giant hand grips, maybe meant for giants so strong that they can just grab and lift the truck rather than jack it up when they want to change a tire.

Readers commenting on websites didn't hold back when it came to their dislike of the holes in the grille after the truck was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show.

"That is the most horrible grille IN the history of trucks," writes The R on the Allpar.com web site. "Please kill it. ... You take a beautiful truck and murder it with that nose."

Another commenter, Colcrafts, says "UUuugly! Are we sure it's a Ram? It has Edsel written all over it."

Auto reviewers taking their first look were more guarded. Mark Williams at PickupTrucks.com called them "outer flaring nostril ports." He opines that perhaps Ram was trying to find a way to set itself apart from its Dodge roots, stylistically.

If you hate the new grille, bear in mind that it certainly won't be the first controversial front end in automotive history. There's no shortage of other automakers that have taken a shot at being beloved for breakthrough looks, only to be enmeshed in controversy. Check out our gallery to see many of them.

Pickup truck makers have been growing the size of grilles. Here's Ford's 2015 F-150 with an overwhelming grille. It's needed, Ford says, to give hard-working truck engines enough cooling air. And to look "tough."Pickup truck makers have been growing the size of grilles. Here's Ford's 2015 F-150 with an overwhelming grille. The grill is o.k. but that's a whole lotta chrome!

Can someone photoshop the horizontal slats black? I think it would be more reserved...

It makes it look like a lower end version omitting fog or off road lights...

Here. This is not exactly a photoshop, but an image of a show-photo.
