Default 1 in 5 vehicles has been recalled this year

2014 will forever be known as the year of the recalls. General Motors has been the biggest culprit, with over 70 recalls to date, but there have been plenty of other notable recalls competing for our attention.

Now, CNN Money is reporting that 2014 has seen a total of 544 recalls, or about two a day, so far. Those recalls have afflicted 52 million vehicles, or about one in every five on US roads. Disturbing as that figure may be, it's made worse by the fact that 2014 has easily eclipsed the previous record of 30.8 million units back in 2004. With another ten weeks left in the year, there remains a solid chance that this year will double the previous total.

While it's easy to chalk up the plethora of recalls to falling reliability, there's a much more obvious reason that so much is going wrong so often. "We all want our cars to do far more than they did in the past," Stericycle VP Mike Rozembajgier told CNN. "It takes a lot of gadgets to make that happen, and that adds to complexity."

With our demand for more and more technology in our cars, it seems likely that 2014 will be far from the last year of huge recalls.

Default Honda execs take 'quality-related' pay cut after Fit Hybrid's 5th recall

Generally, the best policy in life is to admit when you're wrong and just accept the consequences. However, that attitude generally seems to be a bit less common in the world of business – at least without some government or legal prodding. So, it's especially surprising to learn that top Honda executives in Japan are taking a pay cut for the next three months following the fifth recall of the Fit Hybrid (pictured above) in the last 12 months.

According to Reuters, Chief Executive Takanobu Ito is taking a 20-percent pay cut to make amends for the quality issues. Also, 12 other high-ranking executives are taking 10 percent drops in their salaries. In addition to those temporary changes, Honda is creating a new position in charge of monitoring vehicle quality.

The latest recall fixes "noise-related defects," according to Reuters, on both the hybrid and naturally aspirated versions of the Fit, both variants of the Vezel (the sibling to the future HR-V in the US) and the N-WGN. There have also been three recalls for problems with the hybrid's seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. None of them have caused reported injuries or deaths, and these issues haven't affected US models.

Still, the quality concerns come at a rough time for Honda globally. While it tackles these problems in Japan, over five million vehicles in the US could potentially still need repairs due to faulty airbag inflators from Takata.

Default Audi recalls 850,000 A4 models globally for airbags that won't deploy

Audi has announced that it will be recalling 850,000 A4 sedans, wagons and Allroad models across the globe due to a software problem that could prevent the front airbags from deploying. All 850,000 vehicles were built after 2012.

Audi has already adjusted production of new A4s to eliminate the software glitch. Meanwhile, the German manufacturer was quick to emphasize that Takata did not manufacture the affected airbags.

According to Reuters, 250,000 of the affected A4s were built for the Chinese market, while another 150,000 were sold in Germany. Audi didn't provide a breakdown beyond those two countries, although it'd be a surprise if there weren't at least some affected airbags in the US market.

We're still waiting on official word of the recall from Audi or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Default Ford recalling 205k Edge and Lincoln MKX units for possible corrosion

FORD ISSUES SAFETY RECALL FOR CERTAIN 2007-2008 FORD EDGE AND LINCOLN MKX VEHICLES IN NORTH AMERICA FOR POTENTIAL FUEL TANK ISSUE

OCT 29, 2014 | DEARBORN, MICH.

Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 205,000 (actual 204,448) 2007-2008 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles in corrosion states and provinces in North America for possible corrosion under the reinforcement brackets where the fuel tank is mounted to the vehicle.

This condition may result in a fuel odor, fuel leak or potentially a check engine light. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire. Ford is aware of one fire that may be related to this condition, with no injuries and no accidents.

Affected vehicles include certain 2007-2008 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles built at Oakville Assembly, from June 15, 2006 to Sept. 22, 2008. Ford is aware of 186,024 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, and 18,424 vehicles in Canada.

Affected vehicles include those that are currently registered or were originally sold in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as in the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.

Dealers will inspect the fuel tank and either replace or repair it at no cost to the customer.

Default Chinese protesting VW recall fix nationwide

This is unquestionably the year of the recall in the United States with an estimated 544 campaigns so far (and counting) that cover around 52 million cars. The repairs are almost starting to seem normal at this point, but apparently the same can't be said for China. That country's buyers are protesting Volkswagen for its handling of one recent safety action.

The issue concerns VW's 1.1-million-vehicle recall in China and North America to fix the rear suspensions on some models of the Beetle, Jetta and the Sagitar. If the rear suspension is damaged in an accident, some parts could subsequently shatter while driving. To rectify the problem, the company is adding a part that makes a sound signaling if an inspection is required. Chinese buyers also get a 10-year warranty on rear-suspension repairs related to the campaign, according to Bloomberg.

The recall affects around 581,000 vehicles in China, which seems moderate by current US standards, but consumers are very displeased with how the campaign is going. They believe that VW is downplaying the severity of the problem. According to Bloomberg, there were recently protests at dealers in Shanghai and Shenzhen with people holding up banners and handing out leaflets against the brand.

The protesters have urged even more demonstrations around the country in the coming weeks, and some have requested that VW either replace the entire rear suspension or refund buyers. According to Bloomberg, at least 340 Sagitar owners have employed a Beijing law firm to sue the automaker. They claim that some vehicles have had rear suspension problems without being involved in an accident and that the company's handling of the campaign has been unsatisfactory.

Default Chrysler recalling 382k Ram HD diesel pickups, 184k SUVs

Statement: Fuel-Heater Housing

October 29, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group is voluntarily recalling an estimated 381,876 trucks globally, to upgrade certain wiring-harness terminals and replace – if necessary – their fuel-heater housings.

Restricted to vehicles equipped with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines, the campaign follows an investigation of two cases in which fuel-heater housings showed signs of overheating. Chrysler Group is unaware of any incidents involving fire.

Chrysler Group engineers discovered a terminal connector near the fuel heater may be subject to friction-induced corrosion. This condition may lead to overheating and potential fuel leakage.

The Company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

Service technicians will install new terminals made from upgraded material. Fuel-heater housings will be inspected and, if they show signs of leakage, they will be replaced. This work will be performed at no cost to customers.

Affected are certain model-year 2010-2014 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, and 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs. An estimated 314,704 are in the U.S.; 59,432 are in Canada; 1,803 are in Mexico and 5,937 are outside the NAFTA region.

Owners of these vehicles will be notified by Chrysler Group and advised when they may schedule service. Customers with questions may call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Statement: Software Upgrade
October 29, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group is voluntarily recalling an estimated 184,186 SUVs globally, to upgrade software that helps manage Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Following an investigation prompted by field data, Chrysler Group engineers discovered a debris cover protecting a certain circuit board may inadvertently disrupt a communication line and disable ESC.

The Company is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

The software upgrade restores proper communication and preserves ESC function.

Affected customers will be notified next month and advised when they may schedule service, the cost of which will be borne by Chrysler Group.

The campaign covers certain model-year 2014 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. An estimated 132,223 are in the U.S.; 8,871 are in Canada; 4,742 are in Mexico and 38,350 are outside the NAFTA region.

Customers with questions may call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Default NHTSA probing Ram recall pace, communication

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that it's looking into Chrysler Group's handling of a pair of recalls affecting roughly one million Ram pickup trucks. Reuters is reporting that the regulatory agency is focusing on the availability (or lack thereof) of parts and "poor communications" from the automaker in its investigation.

"Customers have been advised in accordance with the regulations governing recalls," Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne told Reuters via email. "We are continually replenishing our supply of replacement parts. Chrysler Group regrets any inconvenience our customers may have experienced."

NHTSA disagrees, arguing that the recalls, which affect 972,000 trucks from 2003 to 2012, are being delayed by the lack of parts.

"We have concerns with the administration and execution of these safety recalls and accordingly have opened an investigation to collect further information from Chrysler about the details of administration and execution of these campaigns and the logic that supports the strategies used," NHTSA wrote in a letter to Chrysler earlier this month, Reuters reports.

Over 1,000 consumers complained to NHTSA, prompting the probe, according to documents acquired by Reuters. Customers claimed that they attempted to have the recall work performed after Chrysler announced repairs would begin in January, only to be told by dealers it could take months for parts to become available.

Default FCA recalling 33k vans and SUVs for TPMS problems in two campaigns

RECALL Subject : TPMS may not Locate Sensors/FMVSS 138

Report Receipt Date: OCT 08, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V633000
Component(s):
Potential Number of Units Affected: 23,053
All Products Associated with this Recall
Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s)
RAM PROMASTER 2014
Details

Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC

SUMMARY:
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 Ram ProMaster vehicles manufactured April 23, 2013, to August 22, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may fail to learn the locations of the individual sensors while the vehicle is being driven. As a result, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate, despite the the tire pressures being within specification. Should one of the tires lose air pressure, the driver would not be notified of the change in air pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."

CONSEQUENCE:
If the TPMS light illuminates because the sensors cannot be located, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the TPMS module with new software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in November 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P62.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Statement: Tire Pressure Monitors

October 30, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group is voluntarily recalling an estimated 33,443 light trucks in two separate campaigns to prevent false warnings from Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) systems.

The Company is unaware of any injuries or accidents associated with either.

One campaign will upgrade software that helps TPM sensors recognize from which tire pressure data is coming. Absent such capability, a warning light may falsely signal that tire pressure is low. And if the light is already activated, the system may not properly alert vehicle occupants if tire pressure actually becomes low.

Affected are an estimated 23,053 Ram ProMaster full-size vans from model-year 2014. All are in the U.S.

The second campaign will reconfigure a TPM module to disable a test mode that was inadvertently left on following shipment from the supplier. When installed in a vehicle, a TPM module configured this way may not get accurate tire-pressure readings, which could result in a false warning.

Affected are an estimated 10,390 Jeep Wrangler SUVs and Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country minivans from model-year 2014. All are in the U.S.

Owners of all vehicles implicated in the two recalls will be notified next month and advised when they may schedule service, the cost of which will be borne by Chrysler Group.

Customers with questions may call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Default NHTSA fines Ferrari $3.5 million for missing reports

Ferrari will pay a $3.5 million penalty for family to comply with oversight requirements set forth by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The federal agency that oversees road safety in the United States announced Friday morning that Ferrari had not submitted early warning reports for the past three years. These reports help the agency identify potential or existing safety threats.

In the wake of the rolling recalls for defective General Motors ignition switches, there has been considerable scrutiny of NHTSA's handling – or mishandling – of these early warning reports. Friday's fine is an indication the agency is taking its enforcement mandates more seriously, albeit against a manufacturer that has no large-scale presence on American roads.

"There is no excuse for failing to follow laws created to keep drivers safe," US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a written statement, "and our aggressive enforcement action today underscores the point that all automakers will be held accountable if they fail to do their part in our mission to keep Americans safe on the road."

Federal law requires manufacturers to file EWR reports quarterly, and NHTSA officials say Ferrari failed to do so for three years and also failed to report three fatal accidents. As a small-volume manufacturer, Ferrari wasn't required to submit the quarterly reports until it fell under the Fiat banner in 2011, though it has always needed to report fatal accidents.

In a statement, Ferrari spokesperson Krista Florin said the missed reporters were inadvertent, and that Ferrari had implemented new procedures to "ensure full compliance in the future."

Default Infiniti SUV recall marks latest chapter in Takata airbag saga

Infiniti Statement

Infiniti is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign to replace the driver's side air bag inflator in 1,912 2013 QX56 and 2014 QX80 full-size luxury sport utility vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The subject inflators may have been incorrectly assembled, and in the event of a crash may cause abnormal deployment of the driver's air bag. Infiniti is unaware of any injuries that may have been caused by this issue. Infiniti plans to notify potentially affected customers by mid-November, asking them to bring their vehicles to an authorized retailer for the driver's side air bag to be replaced. The repair is expected to take less than an hour, depending on the retailer's work schedule. While we regret any inconvenience this campaign brings to our owners, the safety and satisfaction of our customers is Infiniti's highest priority.

Default Porsche recalling 4,400 911, Boxster and Cayman models over hood latches

Porsche to replace hood lock bracket on 4,428 two-door vehicles worldwide

Atlanta. As a precautionary measure, Porsche is conducting a voluntary safety recall to replace the lock bracket on the front hood of 4,428 two-door sports cars worldwide, of which 1,382 are in the United States. The affected vehicles are limited to model year 2014 and 2015 911, Boxster, and Cayman vehicles. Ongoing internal quality inspection procedures found that while these vehicles pass all current strength requirements, it was determined that these specific parts may not meet Porsche-specific quality standards throughout the life cycle of the vehicle. No incidents, accidents, or injuries have been reported to Porsche, nor any instances of an unintentional opening of the front hood.

The issue was discovered during routine in-house quality checks and was immediately corrected in production. The owners of the identified vehicles will be notified within 60 days. These customers will be asked to make an appointment as soon as possible with their authorized Porsche dealer to have the recall performed. No costs will be incurred to replace this part, and the appointment will take approximately half an hour.

Default NHTSA grants Aston Martin temporary exemption from new safety standards

A few months ago, we reported that Aston Martin was in danger of running afoul of new US safety regulations that could force it to take some of its most popular models off the market. The automaker, its dealers and – according to the overwhelming results of our informal online pole – you yourselves reasoned that the constricting regulations were unfair to a small-scale, niche automaker like Aston Martin. And the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration evidently agrees, granting the British automaker a temporary exemption from the regulations and allowing it to keep its cars on the US market.

The issue comes down to new side-impact crash standards that require motor vehicles to better withstand a collision with a stationary object like a pole or a tree. The Vantage and DB9 models do not meet the new regulations, and Aston, it seems, doesn't have the wherewithal to re-engineer the cars to meet the regulations. But given the small nature of the independent automaker and the relatively small number of vehicles it sells, NHTSA has granted Aston an exemption.

As a result, instead of being forced to comply with the new regulations that took effect for the coupes this past September and for convertibles the next – or else withdraw from the market altogether – the DB9 coupe will have until August 2016 to comply, while the DB9 Volante and both coupe and convertible models in the Vantage line will have until August 2017.

It's entirely possible that, by that point, Aston will have all-new models on offer, potentially replacing the Vantage and DB9 models or giving it sufficient new products to offer that taking those older, non-compliant models off the market would not cause it the same degree of financial harm. The automaker has an all-new platform in the works and a new engine deal with Mercedes-AMG in place, and was recently spotted testing what could be the first of its new generation of models at the Nürburgring.

Default Ford announces bevy of recalls, 2 of which are recalls on recalls

FORD ISSUES FIVE SAFETY RECALLS IN NORTH AMERICA
Ford is issuing five safety recalls in North America. In one instance, there is one accident attributed to a condition. No injuries are attributed in any of these conditions. Details are as follows:

Ford issues safety recall for certain 2014 Transit Connect vehicles in North America for fuel and vapor line routing issue
Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 27,600 2014 Ford Transit Connect vehicles in North America (actual 27,597) for potentially incorrect fuel and vapor line routing. If the lines are routed incorrectly, they may rub together, possibly causing a leak in the fuel line over time. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to this condition.

Affected vehicles include certain 2014 Transit Connect vehicles with a 2.5-liter engine built at Valencia Assembly, Aug. 1, 2013 to July 10, 2014. Ford is aware of 25,238 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, and approximately 2,359 in Canada.

Dealers will inspect the lines, and reroute and replace the fuel line if necessary. This will be done at no cost to the customer.

Ford issues safety recall for certain 2015 Transit vehicles in North America for potential fuel filter issue
Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 90 2015 Ford Transit vehicles in North America (actual 92) for an issue with the bracket that holds the fuel filter to the frame. It may become detached over time, resulting in a knocking sound or an engine stall due to fuel starvation. An unexpected engine stall while driving, with the inability to restart the engine, may lead to an increased risk of a crash.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.

Affected vehicles include certain 2015 Transit vehicles with a 3.2-liter diesel engine built at Kansas City Assembly, July 28, 2014 to Aug. 7, 2014. Ford is aware of 89 vehicles in the United States and three in Canada.

Dealers will inspect the vehicles and reinforce the underbody structure, if necessary. This will be done at no cost to the customer.

Ford issues safety recall for certain 2005-2011 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car vehicles in North America for potentially improper repair in previous recall
Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 38,600 2005-2011 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car vehicles in North America (actual 38,645) because they may have been improperly repaired during a previous safety recall for an issue with the lower intermediate steering shaft. This improper repair could potentially result in a loss of steering.

Ford is aware of one accident and no injuries attributed to this condition.

The vehicles being recalled include certain 2005-2011 Ford Crown Victoria vehicles built at St. Thomas Assembly, March 23, 2004 to Aug. 30, 2011; certain 2005-2011 Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles built at St. Thomas Assembly, March 23, 2004 to Aug. 30, 2011; certain 2005-2007 Lincoln Town Car vehicles built at Wixom Assembly, March 8, 2004 to June 5, 2007 and certain 2008-2011 Lincoln Town Car vehicles built at St. Thomas Assembly, Aug. 28, 2007 to Aug. 30, 2011.

Ford is aware of 36,888 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, and 1,757 in Canada.

Dealers will inspect and replace the upper intermediate steering shaft if necessary. They will also inspect the steering column lower bearing and install a bearing retainer kit if necessary.

Ford issues safety compliance recall for certain 2014 F-150 vehicles in North America for brake pedal position switch issue
Ford is issuing a safety compliance recall for approximately 950 2014 Ford F-150 vehicles in North America (actual 960) for a brake pedal position switch that may be incorrectly adjusted, possibly resulting in a delay or a non-illumination of the brake lights when the brake pedal is depressed. This is a noncompliance issue with FMVSS 108, which relates to lamps.

Drivers may need to use additional brake pressure to disengage the cruise control system, so Ford is advising customers not to use cruise control until the vehicle has been repaired. The cruise control system off switch on the steering wheel will continue to disengage the system.

Default Toyota recalling select 2014 Camry and Avalon models

TOYOTA RECALLS CERTAIN 2014 CAMRY AND AVALON VEHICLES

TORRANCE, Calif., November 4, 2014 – Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., today announced plans to conduct a voluntary safety recall of approximately 5,650 Model Year 2014 Toyota Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon and Avalon Hybrid vehicles.

In the involved vehicles, the left front suspension lower arm may have an improperly manufactured bolt hole where it connects to the ball joint. This could affect bolt clamping force. If this condition exists, in the event of a severe impact to the lower ball joint, which could result from varying road surfaces during normal driving, the lower arm could separate from the ball joint. Separation of the lower arm can cause a loss of steering control.

Toyota is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this condition.

Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a notification by first class mail. Toyota dealers will replace the left front lower suspension arm with a new one.

Detailed information is available at www.toyota.com/recall and by calling Toyota Customer Service at 1-800-331-4331.
