Default Ferrari recalls 458 Italia because its trunk is a dangerous place to stow kids

Ferrari is recalling 3,000 458 Italia and Spider models and, believe it or not, it's not because they may catch fire. Nope, instead, the issue focuses on anyone that's unfortunate enough to become trapped in the Ferrari's perilously small frunk (front-mounted trunk).

Apparently, should someone find themselves trapped in the car's nose, the interior release handle only lets loose one of frunk's latches. That means that while anyone held captive by the V8-powered supercar won't be in danger of suffocating and will still be able to call for help, the cars are still ultimately in violation of federal safety mandates.

According to Uncle Sam, should someone become trapped in a trunk, like a child, they must be able to open the trunk from the inside and escape. That can't happen in the 458.

It's not clear which model years are covered, although according to CNN Money, only the 458 Italia and Spider are covered by the recall. If you're a lucky 458 Speciale owner, you're clean and clear... we think.

Default Chrysler recalls 350k vehicles over ignition switches

Statement: Ignition Key

September 25, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group is voluntarily recalling an estimated 349,442 older-model vehicles to correct conditions that may cause ignition keys to become stuck or inadvertently move.

Chrysler Group investigated and found the ignition keys on certain model-year 2008 vehicles produced before May 12, 2008, may not fully return to the "ON" position after rotation to the "START" position during engine-startup. Instead, they may remain between the "START" and "ON" positions. If this occurs, windshield defroster and wiper function may be lost. Air bag function is not affected.

Less probable is the prospect that an ignition key may not fully return to the "ON" position after rotation to the "START" position and may inadvertently move through the "ON" position to "ACCESSORY" or "OFF." If this occurs, it may result in reduced braking power and a loss of engine power, power steering, and one or more of the vehicle's safety features including front air bags.

Among the vehicles subject to recall, Chrysler Group is aware of a single minor accident that was possibly related to either condition. The Company is unaware of any related injuries.

The campaign is limited to 2008 Dodge Charger sedans, Dodge Magnum station wagons, Chrysler 300 sedans, Jeep Commander and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. It covers an estimated 292,224 vehicles in the U.S.; 18,976 in Canada; 4,947 in Mexico; and 33,295 outside the NAFTA region.

All affected customers will be notified when they may schedule service, which will be provided at no cost to them. In the interim, owners of these models are advised to confirm their ignition keys are set in the "ON" position (one o'clock) after starting their vehicles. This will assure engine power and intended functionality of all systems, including front air bags.

As a supplementary precaution, customers are advised to detach their ignition keys from key rings and other keys.

Owners with questions may also call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Default Ford recalling 850,000 cars and SUVs for airbag issues

FORD ISSUES SAFETY RECALL FOR CERTAIN 2013-2014 FORD C-MAX, FUSION, ESCAPE AND LINCOLN MKZ VEHICLES IN NORTH AMERICA FOR RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE ISSUE

Ford Motor Company is issuing a safety recall for approximately 850,000 (actual 850,050) 2013-2014 Ford C-MAX, Fusion, Escape and Lincoln MKZ vehicles in North America for a potential issue with the restraints control module.

In the affected vehicles, the restraints control module may experience a short circuit. If a short circuit occurs, the airbag warning indicator will illuminate. Depending on the location of the short circuit, the deployable restraint systems (e.g., airbags, pretensioners, side curtains) may not function as intended in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. The short circuit may also affect the function of other systems that use data from the restraints control module, including stability control. In these cases, the corresponding warning indicator lamps would also illuminate.

Ford Motor Company is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition. Dealers will replace the restraints control module at no cost to the customer.

Affected vehicles include certain 2013-2014 C-MAX vehicles built at Michigan Assembly Plant, Jan. 19, 2012 to Nov. 21, 2013; certain 2013-2014 Fusion vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, Feb. 3, 2012 to Aug. 24, 2013; certain 2013-2014 Escape vehicles built at Louisville Assembly Plant, Oct. 5, 2011 to Nov. 1, 2013 and certain 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, April 25, 2012 to Sept. 30, 2013.

As of Sept. 24, 2014, we are aware of approximately 745,000 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories (actual 746,842), approximately 82,000 in Canada (actual 82,962) and approximately 20,000 in Mexico (actual 20,246).

Default Takata airbag recall may soon embroil GM

When it comes to recalls, two companies have taken up the bulk of the news lately. One is General Motors, which has been cleaning house in the wake of the ignition switch debacle. The other is Takata, an airbag manufacturer that supplies some of the biggest names in the business. But now those two recall giants could be intersecting as reports indicate that GM may be forced to recall some of its vehicles due to the faulty Takata airbags as well.

The problem, for those of you just joining, revolves around the Japanese company's airbags, which have been found to deploy unexpectedly in specific geographical regions – namely those with a high level of humidity. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started investigating the issue following reports of unwarranted airbag deployment in Florida and Puerto Rico, leading to the recall of millions of vehicles.

To date, those recalls have involved Japanese automakers such as Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi, as well as Ford, Chrysler and BMW. GM's addition to the list would only stand to expand the number of recalled vehicles considerably, although Reuters reports that the exact number has yet to be determined.

Default Toyota recalls 690,000 Tacoma trucks for rusty leaf springs, fire risk

TOYOTA ANNOUNCES VOLUNTARY RECALL OF CERTAIN TACOMA PICKUP TRUCKS FOR REAR LEAF SPRINGS

TORRANCE, Calif., September 29, 2014 – Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it has advised the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of plans to conduct a voluntary safety recall of approximately 690,000 Model Year 2005-2011 Tacoma 4x4 and Tacoma Pre-Runner pickup trucks.

The involved vehicles' rear suspension system contains leaf springs that are constructed of either three or four leaves. There is a possibility that a leaf could fracture due to stress and corrosion. If this occurs and the vehicle continues to be operated, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components, including the fuel tank. If the broken leaf contacts the fuel tank repeatedly, it could puncture the tank and cause a fuel leak. In the presence of an ignition source, this could result in a fire.

Toyota is not aware of any fires, crashes, injuries or fatalities associated with this condition.

Owners of the vehicles involved in this recall will receive a notification by first class mail. Toyota dealers will remedy the condition at no cost to the owner.

Detailed information is available to customers at www.toyota.com/recall and by calling the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Default GM recalling 524k vehicles over hood latches and toe link nuts

General Motors today announced two recalls covering 379,401 cars and trucks in the United States. The total number of vehicles recalled in North America -- U.S., Canada, Mexico and exports -- is 524,384.

290,107 model year 2010-2015 Cadillac SRX and 2011-2012 Saab 9-4X SUVs for torque inspection of rear toe link adjuster lock nuts. Improper torqueing could possibly result in a loose joint and worn threads that could cause the toe adjuster link to separate. Dealers will inspect for the condition and, if necessary, will remove them and install a new link assembly. Unsold vehicles are being checked for proper torqueing before being sold. A loose toe adjuster link can cause the vehicle to sway or wander at highway speed, activate the vehicle's electronic stability control system, and cause excessive wear to the threads in the link. Additionally, the rear suspension may make loud metallic noises, particularly when the vehicle is travelling over bumps or potholes. If separation occurs while the vehicle is being driven, it would create sudden vehicle instability, increasing the risk of a crash. GM is aware of three crashes and two injuries as a result of this condition. GM reported this recall to the NHTSA on September 17.

89,294 model year 2013-2015 Chevrolet Spark models in the U.S., because corrosion can cause the secondary hood latch striker to stick in the open position. If the primary latch is not engaged, the hood could open unexpectedly. These vehicles, imported from South Korea, were manufactured with a secondary hood latch that may prematurely corrode at the latch pivot, causing the striker to get stuck out of position and preventing the striker from properly engaging the hood latch. About 13,000 of these unsold vehicles are being held at U.S. dealerships and will not be delivered until repairs are made. Customers will be notified by letter about the recall and dealers will replace the hood striker when parts are available . GM is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities as a result of this condition. This recall was posted today on the NHTSA website.

On certain vehicles, the rear suspension toe link jam nuts may not have been tightened to specification. If the vehicle is operated in this condition, the toe link nuts could loosen and eventually separate, allowing the rear wheel to turn inboard or outboard. If this were to happen, sudden changes in vehicle handling could occur, which could result in a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

Correction: Dealers will inspect and ensure the rear suspension toe link nuts are tightened to specification. If required, the rear suspension toe link will be replaced.

Default GM issues stop-delivery for 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon

Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon stop delivery statement

General Motors has told dealers to halt deliveries of 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickup trucks. These vehicles contain driver airbag connections that were wired incorrectly during the manufacturing process. This condition affects the vehicles' two-stage airbag system by reversing the deployment sequence and disrupting the deployment timing of the driver airbag stages. This condition will cause the driver airbags to not function as designed.

The majority of affected vehicles are being held at the assembly plant or are in transit or unsold at dealerships. GM is working to validate the correction for the condition. Once that service procedure is released to dealers, customer deliveries can resume. A small number of vehicles have been sold.

Customers are being sent a FedEx letter and being contacted by phone to bring their vehicles to dealers as soon as possible. The repair will be done at no change and free loaner vehicles will be available. A safety recall will be conducted but population and other details are not known at this time. GM is aware of no crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this condition.

Default GM recalls 61k more vehicles in three campaigns

The NHTSA on Saturday posted three GM recalls totaling 57,182 vehicles in the United States. The North American total for the recalls is 60,575. All three recalls were submitted by GM to the NHTSA on September 4.

46,873 model year 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 and 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice PPV (police patrol vehicles) left-hand-drive sedans imported to the U.S. from Australia may experience unintended key rotation from the "Run" to "ACC" position if the driver's knee interacts with the ignition key. GM Holden discovered the condition during a review of unintended key rotation reports in recalled models in North America. Holden is developing a replacement fixed-blade key that rotates the blade 90 degrees that would cause the key to rotate toward the "On" position, rather than the "ACC" position if bumped. GM is aware of one crash, no injuries and no fatalities in these vehicles.

10,005 model year 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V and 2006-2007 Cadillac STS-V sedans in the U.S. On certain vehicles, the fuel pump module electrical terminal may overheat, causing melting of the flange material. On the CTS-V, dealers will replace the fuel module and fuel tank jumper harness. GM knows of no crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the condition.

304 model year 2014 Chevrolet Sonics in the U.S that may have a loose electrical connection in the steering column that may affect driver air bag performance. If the condition is present and the air bag lamp is illuminated, it may result in the driver frontal air bag deploying only as a single-stage air bag in crashes of a certain severity. GM is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this issue.

A fourth GM recall posted Saturday, covering 290,207 Cadillac SRX and Saab 9-4X models, was reported by GM on Friday. It was submitted to the NHTSA on Sept. 17.

Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

SUMMARY:General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Chevrolet Caprice vehicles manufactured October 15, 2010, to December 6, 2013, and 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 vehicles manufactured July 25, 2007, to February 18, 2009. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.

CONSEQUENCE:If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position could cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

REMEDY:GM will notify owners, and dealers will remove the key blade from the original flip key/RKE transmitter assemblies, and cut and fit a revised key blade and housing assembly, in which the blade has been indexed by 90 degrees, to the original RKE transmitter assembly. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737 . GM's number for this recall is 14445. Note: Until the recall has been performed, it is very important that drivers adjust their seat and steering column to allow clearance between their knee and the ignition key.

Due to a loss of electrical connection in the steering column, in the event of a severe crash, the driver's frontal air bag deployment may be limited to the first-stage deployment only instead of the intended first-stage and second-stage deployments.

CONSEQUENCE:If only the first-stage of the driver's frontal air bag deploys without the additional second-stage, the driver has an increased risk of injury during a crash.

REMEDY:GM will notify owners, and dealers will test the terminals in the IP harness clock spring coil connector and replace any loose terminals, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14537.

NOTES:Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Default Chrysler calling in 1,912 Vipers over airbag sensors

Statement: Seat-Position Sensor

October 3, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group is voluntarily recalling an estimated 1,912 cars to improve seat-sensor function.

The action follows an investigation that discovered airbags on some vehicles may deploy less vigorously than intended because the sensor may determine a seat is positioned closer than it is. Chrysler Group is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

Chrysler Group service technicians will install a shim designed to afford the sensor an accurate seat-position reading.

Affected are model-year 2013-14 SRT Vipers. An estimated 1,624 are in the U.S.; 201 are in Canada, 16 in Mexico and 71 outside the NAFTA region.

SUMMARY:
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 SRT Viper vehicles manufactured November 28, 2012, to June 26, 2014. Due to inaccurate seat position sensors, the frontal air bags may deploy with a lower velocity than designed for the actual seat position.

SUMMARY:
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has identified 508 complaints alleging loss of power steering assist and increased steering effort in model year (MY) 2010 to 2012 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ vehicles equipped with rack mounted Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS). Four of these complaints allege that the steering assist failure resulted in increased steering efforts that contributed to a loss of control and crash. In addition, ODI has identified related information in Early Warning Reporting field report data submitted by Ford.

Many of the complaints indicated observing a power steering warning message as the failure occurred. In some cases, the condition was corrected by turning the vehicle off and restarting. However, many reports indicate the condition returned again after restart. A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

Default Ram recalling over 43k Promaster and C/V Tradesman vans for separate issues

Statement: Software Upgrade
October 7, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group is voluntarily recalling an estimated 22,115 small cargo vans to upgrade software that controls certain airbags.

The action follows an investigation that discovered specific vehicle configurations may adversely affect sensors that control side-curtain and/or thorax airbags, causing inadvertent deployment. Chrysler Group is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

These configurations, designed to accommodate cargo, involve the exclusion of rear-audio and climate-control components adjacent to the sensors. The resulting gaps can generate a resonance, exaggerated by loaded roof racks and rough-road inputs, which may disrupt normal sensor operation.

This condition is resolved by the software upgrade. Availability is imminent.

Affected are an estimated 18,245 model-year 2013-2015 Ram C/V Tradesman vehicles in the U.S. and 3,870 in Canada. Owners, most of whom are fleet customers, will be contacted by Chrysler Group and advised when they may schedule service, the cost of which will be borne by the Company.

Owners with questions may call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.

Statement: Head Restraints
October 6, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group is voluntarily recalling an estimated 21,470 full-size vans to replace their head restraints.

The vehicles were assembled with head restraints that may exceed the allowable gap between an occupant's head and the restraint.

Chrysler Group is unaware of any related injuries, accidents or complaints.

Affected are model-year 2014 Ram ProMaster vans. Chrysler Group is expediting acquisition of replacement parts. An estimated 18,951 are in the U.S. and 2,519 are in Canada. Owners are expected to be notified next month and advised when they may schedule service, the cost of which will be borne by the Company.

Owners with questions may call Chrysler Group's Customer Information Center at 1-800-853-1403.
