Apple has released its solution to the confusing infotainment system with CarPlay. We installed it in one of our test vehicles, and give you our first impressions.

A screen demands to be looked at. Having it close and low is dangerous design, esp when you are going to hit different parts of the screen as it transitions from one to the next.

Auto manufacturers really just need to relinquish their media setups to the phone manufacturers. I expect in the future that when you first buy a new car, the infotainment system will ask if you want to connect to your mobile system and load the correct interface, whether it be car play, android auto, or other. This approach should save them r&d in the long run and prevent things like MBs COMAND, Caddys QUE, iDrive, Enform, etc.

doing iOS or Android would be a lot easier to program and far better quality. After using a smartphone then a car infotainment system, the cars system seems so ancient. Hard to believe it took this long for them to catch on

Absolutely agreed, and I imagine it could possibly be a source of savings as each manufacturer wouldn't have to spend dollars developing their own software and effectively just outsource it to the phone manufacturer.

The video says its designed to lockout ur phone. Why???? Plus I don't want to have to worry about plugging up my phone every time I enter the car. Furthermore, what if the kids want to play with ur phone or a passenger wants to use it to snap a picture etc.?
Wireless, auto-connecting bluetooth, and multitasking are the three essential elements missing here.

First they give us keyless entry. And now they want us to take out our phone every time.

Lexus/Toyota has not committed or promised anything with regard to CarPlay or Android Auto.
