Did the guy that designed the previous generation Quattroporte leave or something???
What it boils down to is that Maserati's style of building cars wasn't sustainable. With Fiat suffering such big losses in Europe, they needed Maserati to actually build cars people wanted to own instead of admire from afar. Hence they styling had to take a minor hit to accommodate an interior size appropriate for its class (Quattroporte), their interiors are now more ergonomic, and these sedans are sitting on a heavily modified LX platform.

Maserati already builds cars people want to own. What they need is product. The Quattroporte and Gran Turismo can't do it alone. Hence the Ghibli (somewhat 5-Series sized) and it's lower price point into the Maserati Brand.
I've found Maserati to have great looking, yet distinctive, designs, unfortunately the stories associated with their warranty support has been enough to keep me from pulling the trigger on GranTurismo in the past. It's kind of sad, because this is also a great looking car.

Eh. By the end of its run the Quattroporte was a hard sell. It didn't offer anything over the competition besides handling (less important to most barge owners) and was comparatively cramped. Similar to Aston Martin owners, you really had to ignore a lot to love the car. They've done a much better job keeping the Gran Turismo fresh and competitive. This newest Quattroporte does a lot more for the money and makes itself easier to love.

I think it looks great and will increase sales for the brand which is badly needed. I think they should do an SUV as well. They just need to price it right and it will move
