Default BMW 328d confirmed for New York debut

BMW 328d confirmed for New York debut

Late last year, some of BMW's future diesel plans for the US market were leaked, and we learned that a diesel-powered version of the 3 Series sedan (pictured above in 335i guise) would be coming in the first quarter of 2013. That report appears to be holding true, as BMW has just confirmed the debut of the oil-burning 328d sedan as part of the company's New York Auto Show plans.

The 328d will be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine good for 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The rear-wheel-drive sedan will hit 60 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds and fuel economy numbers could "well exceed" 40 miles per gallon. (Official EPA numbers will be released closer to the car's launch.)

Audi just announced the diesel A4 will be here too. Agreed, Lexus needs to get on the ball with the ISh. It's a terrible omission with no U.S. 3IS.
One bad thing with diesel here in L.A. is it costs .50 cents more per gallon.

That's how it is in my area. It's usually more expensive than premium gas.

Right now diesel is about the same cost as premium in my area.

A 328 diesel is nice depending on the cost.

I'd get this 328d over the upcoming 320i. Reviewers love the 328i because its punchy and balanced. 335i isn't getting as much love as it's E90 predecessor

They've actually got FIVE new Diesels coming in the fall. 328d sedan rwd/awd, 328d touring awd, 535d sedan rwd/awd.

I'm stoked about that last one. Think my wife's RX350 will get replaced with a rwd 535d.

Since we're stupid Americans, they're trying to prevent hundreds of conversations like this:

"Why does the 320d cost so much more than the 320i?"
"Because it's about as powerful/quick as the 328i, but gets better fuel economy than the 320i."
"But it's a 320, so it can't be as good as a 328. I'll take the 328i. It IS eight better after all."

Since it roughly matches the 328i in both price and performance, they apparently don't want us to think less of it just because of the number. Europeans actually understand diesels and don't have a problem with this.

Except that 0-60 in 7.2s is nowhere close to the 328i which does it in less than 6 seconds.

With respect to the CT200h (1.8L), HS250h (2.4L), ES300h (2.5L) and RX400h (3.3L)

the others LS600hL (5.0L), RX450h (3.5L), GS450h (3.5L) are all exactly 1 full liter above their actual displacement.

Meaning this supposed GS700h F would be a good 6.0 liters of displacement + hybrid power in a Lexus. mmm yes

Yeah except the Germans don't make much sense, they just use a number...

it is nice engine and it is great that it is coming as it is frugal engine, but its deception to call it 328d, if we call it 320d in Europe...
