Default High Mileage Supra Anyone?

Hey guys, I know this is an ISF forum but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or experiences with an MKIV Twin Turbo Supra (93-98). I'm considering one with higher mileage (150k+).

I tried posting on supraforums but it wouldn't allow me to make a new thread since I'm a new member

Just wanted to ask if you guys knew of any problems with those supras? I've heard of turbo leaks? But other than that I havent read about any other major problems? Also, what would the value be for an Automatic (yeah I know ) MKIV Supra with over 150k miles unmolested?

Thanks in advance everyone!

I'm assuming you want a TT? I've seen quite a few TT's with 150,000+ miles and run just fine. I've never heard of any issues that weren't caused by abuse or because the car was in an accident.

As far as NA Supras go, most high mileage ones I see are straight trash. The cars are very reliable but typically have been abused pretty bad. Engine wise it's about as reliable as a GS300, IS300, or SC300 would be.

I'd say $15,000 would be a decent price for a high mileage MKIV with an automatic transmission. It would have to be in good condition. Typically you can get a decent one with around 100,000 miles with an auto for around $20,000 if you're lucky.

No personal experiences with them (besides getting smoked by one), but when I used to check Supraforums back in '04, I recall a few members that were boosting around 400whp+ with 120k or more miles on them with no real issues.

Seems like the Supra MKIV has been a hell of an investment as it has kept so much of its value. For that price range you could get an E46 M3 (a much newer, high performance car with large aftermarket support) with half the miles.

The supra is a very well built car. If you find a clean one I'd buy it. They can push a butt load of boost off stock motor. They are great cars and very rare.

if you know what your doing pick it up.

as with old high mileage cars, the engines bound to go. most people with supra's end up rebuilding it anyways (which you would want to do with a supra, and add more power!)

No problem man.

Another option could be to buy a cheap high mileage NA Supra or just a Supra TT shell real cheap and drop a clean motor in it. I may got that route myself.

Are we talking about a N/A or Twin turbo model??? If its an N/A model and been maintained/not ragged out, it should be as reliable as any other Toyota product. The turbo models are a lot more complex/maintence intensive, once again it all boils down to how well it was treated by the previous owner/owners.

hopefully you are talking about a TT model. i would agree that $15k is about the right price. do not waste your time and money on an NA-T swap.

Thanks for all the replies. It is the twin turbo model. I test drove it today and it drives very well. It needs some tlc to get it in mint condition but I definitely see the potential.

However, the targa top rattled like CRAZY. If I can't figure out a way to fix it, I personally wouldn't drive it no matter how nice it drove. The rattling is insane. Hopefully I can find some threads on how to fix it.

Wow 15k for a high mileage tt is a pretty good deal in my opinion. I see tons of high mileage na ones going for around that much.

Targa bolts, along with the seals, are probably shot. Easy fix. Hell, the targa bolts may not have been tightened all the way.
