For people in California, you can now replace your boring white plates w/ these new "legacy plates" ... which are black, blue, or yellow in color! Pre-orders begin now, and they will produce them after they get 7,500 orders.
I'm putting in my pre-order for a Black plate tomorrow
Legislation introduced the California Legacy License Plate program offering vehicle owners the opportunity to purchase replicas of California license plates similar to those issued in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. Legacy License plates can be ordered for any year model automobile, commercial vehicle, motorcycle, or trailer. The Legacy License Plate Program will not replace the current Year of Manufacture (YOM) license plate program.
The DMV is accepting pre-orders until January 1, 2015. A pre-order form California Legacy License Plate Pre-Order Form (REG 17L) (PDF) is available for these plates. The completed form and $50 payment must be mailed to the address provided on the form. Payment can only be made by check, money order, or cashier’s check made payable to Department of Motor Vehicles. Pre-orders will NOT be processed at DMV Field offices or Auto Club offices.
the link to the FAQ is broken, anybody know if its A-a recurring annual cost, and B-if you can keep your current plate no. (custom or otherwise) or if you have to get new ones?
Finally! Something to take away from the white plates we currently have. I always wanted to rock the blue/yellow plates my parents had on their rides in the 70s, but now that there's a black/yellow option, I'm going with that one. I like that it'll blend in much better with certain car colors.
I'm with you PureDrifter. The only thing holding me back is if it'll be a recurring cost, but when I went to the actual order page, there's an option for you to keep your current plate number and have it transferred to the new plate style.
But I also think this is a great way to get plates to blend in with your car color/theme ... the white plates stick out like a sore thumb.
Problem is.....with those black vintage plates, the yellow lettering also sticks out like a sore thumb. I can remember, decades ago, I could often tell a California car from some distance away just by that strong black/bright-yellow contrast.
