Clock is not a green block letter display, it's part of a multiconfiguration screen.

Avalon has small presentation details done right.

From LED DRL tubes to cool HIDs to interior start sequence that lights up in a motion to 5 touch sensor behind ventilation selector... it is just cool.

i have to post few of these, since they do show clear progress. For some reason these pics on pressroom.toyota.com are not of greatest quality even in large resolutions.

I have yet to read one sentence from any magazine about ugly Avalon and especially about cheap interior, in fact every single review was extremely positive about interior and quite few mentioned it is actually nicer than ES (and they all dissed previous Toyota interiors, so it is not like Toyota subscribed to good reviews in that regard).

It would be actually cool if you could find some time in next 2-3 weeks to go and check it out in real life and tell us how it felt in person, and much appreciated too (if you could find time). As this is the future of Toyota interiors, and similar things will be found in many future Toyota's, like Rav4 and others.
Agreed. The Japanese don't have a clue anymore and are content on cheapening the interiors. The use of the LCD screens compared to the monochrome one used in the Camry and some of the Lexus is another example of the effort they did here in the states vs. Japan.

haha, mind was faster than the fingers , it is complete mess, sorry... multitasking does not work always :-).

As to 84Cressida, he was comparing JDM Toyota Engineers vs US Toyota Engineers (since US did the Avalon). I do think that Avalon is part of the greater global push from Toyota on interiors, as some of it can be seen in new Corolla/Auris, although it does have 80's style digital clock. However there are other pretty cool parts to Auris that I hope to prove correct once I get to see the car in real life.

One of my biggest pet peeves in car design is when the headlight sticks to the grill. I think that looks really cheap.

Yes, I was comparing the US vs Japanese Toyota engineers. The Japanese are just completely disconnected. Look at the effort put in the Camry and Avalon, not even a year apart from each other.

What is wrong with the effort they put in the Camry? The numbers don't lie as its selling very well.

The Avalon was a dramatic change from the previous one. The Camry wasn't. I like the Camry, and certainly roll my eyes at "enthusiasts" *****ing about it being #1, but compared to Honda and Nissan's efforts, Toyota hit a single, maybe a double.

It does sell pretty well because of its iconic name. I feel that Accord is a much better value car.

I wouldn't call the new Avalon stunning. It's just a radical change from a previous stale and plain car.

What I would say however, is the new Avalon is light years ahead of the Camry as far as presence and grace go. It's like they are cars from two different companies. There is no relation with front and rear styling or interior layout between the two. It appears the Avalon went forward into the future, while the Camry backdated itself.

So I'd say the worst thing about the new Avalon is it makes the Camry look like what it could have been. And I don't want to hear about leading Camry sales. The car could have had Avalon sophistication and sold even better.

thats not really true... Camry sales are so good that I doubt it could have been better.

Problem is the price - Avalon is $10k more than Camry. If they made Camry more sophisticated, it might actually sell worse due to higher price.

Toyota knows what it is doing. The Camry is appropriate as its the volume family car and sells well and doesn't need to be too good where the consumer can't reasonably find a reason to buy a Lexus.

That is the exact problem Honda/Acura continues to have and it's at an all time low
Point with the new accord. After checking them out at sema I see no reason to buy an Acura and the ILX they had there looked ridiculous to the accord.

The Camry might be purposely "dumbed down" so there is no confusion when one steps in a Lexus booth. The Avalon has always been solid but never cannibalized Lexus ES etc sales. It is still no Lexus.

Comparing the Avalon to the Lacross while both look great the Avalon interior, features And hybrid blows the lacrosse away.

What's hilarious is the full size 200hp Avalon hybrid makes 40 MPG and that awful Acura ILX with a whopping 111hp makes around 37 MPG
