Default Ford's Taurus-based Police Interceptor getting more power to catch scofflaws

Ford's Taurus-based Police Interceptor getting more power to catch scofflaws

Ford has revealed that it is updating the base powerplant on its 2013 Police Interceptor sedan. Ford's 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine will replace the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine in its Taurus cop car, and the new engine will slot under the optional twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6.

The V6 offered is a version of the powerplant found in the base Mustang and F-150, and it was already available on Ford's Police Interceptor Utility (read: enforcement-spec Explorer). With the help of twin independent variable camshaft timing, the 3.7-liter V6 makes 305 horsepower and 279 pound-feet of torque. It puts up these numbers while achieving 18 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway. Combined fuel economy is 21 mpg.

According to Ford, the 3.7-liter provides the highest output of any naturally aspirated V6 pursuit engine. The change should improve its 0–60 time, especially compared to competing six-cylinder pursuit vehicles. If you recall, the outgoing 288-hp 3.5-liter V6 resulted in a 0–60 run of 8.36 seconds, well behind the 7.34 of the Chevrolet Caprice PPV V6 (301 hp), and the 7.68 of the Dodge Charger Pursuit V6 (292 hp). The new 3.7-liter mill should put the Ford Police Interceptor in that range, though we do not yet have those numbers.

If a police department decides that 305 horsepower is not enough to chase down perpetrators, Ford still offers its 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine with 365 horsepower, and it's still the only twin-turbocharged V6 engine being offered in America's police vehicle fleet.

Earlier this week I test drove a Lincoln MKS with the Eco Boost engine (365hp/350lb ft). The car weighs nearly 4,400 lbs but had plenty of power and very responsive around town. I'm not a fan of the exterior (big butt rear end and all) but inside it was very nice with excellent seats and every electronic gadget and feature you'd want. The car I drove had a sticker of $58.2k!

The only reason i drove it was that I got a card in the mail for a free pair of Maui Jim sunglasses (up to $259) for test driving a Lincoln.

Power or not, no scofflaw is faster than a police radio.

We drove a new Ford Edge prior to buying the used RX350. The 3.7l is offered in the Sport model.
Plenty of "GO" for a small vehicle. Torque numbers must all be down in the low RPM range. I expect it was close to the same weight as the Lincoln noted previously. HP is meaningless without torque.
Drove a new Taurus the week before, not impressed.

Default Ford claims victory in latest round of Michigan State Police testing

Ford claims victory in latest round of Michigan State Police testing

The Ford Crown Victoria relinquished its crown as the top police car when it went out of production last year, but Ford is claiming it still produces the dominant police vehicles on the market. This, following the most recent cop car comparison test held by the Michigan State Police.

While we're still waiting to see the official results for the 2013 model year vehicle evaluations, Ford is saying its new Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan and Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility outperformed other cars intended for rigorous police duty.

For the Police Interceptor Sedan, departments that opt for the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 will be rewarded with the best 0-60 mile per hour, 0-80 mph and 0-100 mph times of all police cars, including V8-powered models like the Dodge Charger Pursuit and Chevrolet Caprice PPV. New for 2013, the sedan will offer a 3.7-liter V6, and Ford claims this model will have the best braking distance of the bunch. Even the Police Interceptor Utility with all-wheel drive had top acceleration to 60 mph and 80 mph compared to the Chevy Tahoe. Both the Sedan and Utility held the fastest average lap times around Grattan Raceway, the track where some of the testing was performed.

Until the official results come out, we can't fully call this a win for Ford just yet, but it sure does make a good case for the next generation of Ford police cars.

Quite a few states are already starting to adopt this new car, and they seem tolove it so far. I have a base 2010 model and so far so good. Plenty of power, handles LOADS better than what I would have ever expected, and is quite comfortable. The Crown Vic is a legend of it's own with the police, but this one may prove to be quite a nice sucessor. Crown Vic will NEVER be replaced tho.

Default Ford Police Interceptors win acceleration war against Dodge, Chevy

Ford Police Interceptors win acceleration war against Dodge, Chevy

Just last month, Ford announced its first-ever non-pursuit-rated version of the Police Interceptor sedan for agencies looking to maximize fuel economy, but that doesn't mean that Ford is giving up on chasing down the bad guys. While the Dodge Charger can lay claim to the fastest lap time at the Grattan Raceway test facility held by the Michigan State Police, the results are now in for the Police Vehicle Evaluation acceleration tests. And Ford's Police Interceptor duo (sedan and utility) came out on top.

In the acceleration tests, Ford says that the Taurus-based PI Sedan with the newly available 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 was the quickest among prospective police cars in both 0-60 and 0-100 mile per hour times. The sedan posted a 0-60 time of 5.66 seconds with all-wheel drive and 5.71 seconds with front-wheel drive, besting V8-powered competitors like the Chevy Caprice and Dodge Charger by more than 0.3 seconds. These rivals close the gap on the AWD sedan in the 0-100 test with the Ford taking 13.5 seconds compared to the Chevy's time of 14.35 and the Dodge's time of 14.7.

As for utility vehicles, the Explorer-based PI Utility, which accounts for 60 percent of Ford's police vehicle sales, essentially went head-to-head with the V8-powered Chevy Tahoe with similar results. Equipped with the new EcoBoost engine option, this big SUV hit 60 mph in just 6.28 seconds and 100 mph in 15.51 seconds compared to times of 8.22 seconds and 21.95 seconds, respectively, for the Tahoe. Other important tests in the PVE include braking and top speed, but while no automakers have stepped up to boast about their numbers in either of these categories, Ford's images show that the V8 Caprice had the highest top speed of the cars at 155 mph while the Tahoe's 139-mph speed made it the fastest utility vehicle.

Bah... all agencies need are a chopper or two, patrol officers on bikes, a few paddywagons, and swat. Everything else is extraneous.

305 HP !?! LMAO thats pathetic. I would assume those cop cars are rocking a V8 with some torque. If they are in pursuit on a highway they will not be able to keep up with a powerful V8 with some real torque. I know a radio is faster but they need to keep up. I have a feeling the 365 HP engine will show sooner than later

The Taurus makes for a terrible police car. Hard to see out of, extremely complicated, and incredibly cramped. Most police fleets here are buying the Explorer or in a few cases the Caprice. Many wish Ford hadn't killed the Crown Vic.

If 305hp/279lbft and a top speed of 133mph is pathetic, the 224hp/275lbft and top speed of 120 put up by the Crown Victoria is just outright unacceptable. Yet it was the most popular police cruiser in history.

Also, while I'm a big a fan of torque as any (as evidenced by the ~500lbft in my daily driver), it's actually the horsepower figure that's most indicative of high-speed acceleration capability. Torque numbers are most important in accelerating from a stop or from slower speeds--there's a reason they call it LOW END power. If highway pursuit is your only yardstick (and it seems to be, based on your post), hp is the number you care about. But either way the old crown vic is trumped by two of the three available Taurus models.
