it is truck engine... i dont think it lacks power... plus Tundra has 5.7l version as well.

interesting as GX is the uber Prado... Exact opposite of what you are thinking :-).

4Runner is loosely based on simplified Prado platform... old V8 versions were same as Prado but were also very expensive.

Not sure that an american would appreciate 4cly diesel prado... it is pretty slow car... crazy slow if you compare it to both V6 4Runner or V8 GX.

Don't forget the 2.7L I4 offered on the 4Runner here in the states. Solely for 2010 2WD models

I don't need fast in an SUV...I'd rather have torque and decent MPG.

I agree that the 4.0 V6 is just fine. It has plentry of torque, and gets decent gas mileage. A lot of my friends drive current gen Tacomas with the V6's and they all seem to be reliable as well.

i dont think you understand - toque is power of course... Prado Diesel is slower than Prius.
Sure Diesel spends 10l/100km while V6 does 15l/100km (i had both), BUT, V6 feels like Porsche and Diesel feels slower than Prius.

we had that GR powered Prado and it went 450,000 miles (still going probably) without any issues (i think timing chain had to be adjusted once, was cheap).

I am glad some agree that the V6 is fine. I think the GX would sell better if it had the V6 option.

As for your friends Tacoma, those Tacomas use the older 4.0 thatt was not upgraded, so the 4.0 is even better.

I have no problem with a V6 GX, but at 270hp and 278lbft, the 4.0L V6 is too close to the 4.6L V8 301hp 329lbft. The V8 needs a power bump

Yes, agreed, Josh, but the Prado is a lot closer to the American-market 4Runner than to the American-market Land-Cruiser, which shares its platform and body with the big Lexus LX570.

After owning a 2010 and now a 2011 4runner with the V6, its not underpowered by any means. I do wish the V8 option was available being my 2003m and 2006 had it. I dont understand why the 4.6L from the GX is not offered considering its decent mileage and with the 6spd auto combo and lighter weight, a 4runner with it might get excellent mileage!

I agree with others - this motor is not underpowered or "thirsty" at all. We have a 2008 4Runner with the 4.0L V6 and that engine can surprise you...seriously. Lots of torque and gearing that knows how to make the most of the engine.

The V6 in the current 4Runner was upgraded to 270hp (from 236 in mine) and 276 lb-ft of torque, so it has even more power.

I'd suggest driving one.

The 4Runner, Land Cruiser Prado, GX460, and FJ Cruiser are all related and connected.

The current GX and 4Runner and almost 99% different.

If you want more power, they used to have a supercharger for the old 4.0. It bumped the power to just over 300hp. I don't know if they make one for the updated V6. But even in stock form, the older engine in my 08 FJ propels it. Just fine. In a truck torque is what matters and these engines deliver ample amounts at low rpm.

I've sampled both, and, outside of the powerplant and trim-levels, I don't totally agree....at least for the U.S.-market versions. But I respect your opinion.
