I took my parents S500 to do minor services (my parents neglect their cars really bad) and I'm not very impressed with the assembly quality. While the materials are generally good, the way thing clip together is just not as sophisticated and solid as comparable Lexus models, and as a result a lot of panels are very loose, wood trim falling off, etc.
I'm very impressed though with amount of floor insulation. They literally have foam panels in the floor board and carpet has rubber backing about 1/2" thick.

just to be sure, you mean s500 or s550? if it's the s500 that car almost falls apart by nature
but between ls460 and s550, i do agree the ls460 has better alignment and better put together. though being on that takes apart cars here and there, i see weak points in both cars as well. just check out the ls460 glove box, still a mystery to me. on the other hand the s550 with the problematic seat rail design

It's S500 - they bought it brand new in 2000 and the car still only has 50k on the clock. I took it from them this past weekend to bring to a detailer and I did some work on it - changed AC filters, fixed trim that was falling off, etc. The clips that they use to attach trim are flimsy and unreliable, and I wasn't very impressed with the glovebox design either (i had to remove it to access the filters).

On a well designed and built car like the LS430, 2 out of 10 are bad.
On a disaster like the W220, 2 out of 10 are good.
That is one reason there are so much arguements on whether a car is good or bad. You have to look at the entire picture, you can't just look at 1 or 2 samples. Your parent's W220 is one sample. You have to look at 100 of them randomly in general.

The one I has was bad, got rid of it with 36K miles on the clock! Both front suspension failed within a week, had to tow 2 times to dealer, even had a hard time towing it since the front of the car dropped on the ground ( VIP style! )
Couldn't pass smog since sensor in the dash failed, requires entire gauge cluster to be replaced, only later found out it's a recall, the dealer reimbusered my expense. The front airbag sensors failed, result a stupid check light on all the time. Finally I just lost confident driving it anymore. So, mine was a bad example!

lol, andy, you really got a lemon. but yes, the w220 is problems after problems on most cars. get on mbworld and i get goose bumps every time i go into that forum. not saying w221 is very good at all, but it's far better than the w220 when it comes to quality.
imho, kind of like how the ls430 is quite a bit better than the ls460
