When the IS-F came out, Lexus had no vision of a spindle front end. The IS-F styling was just how the front end of that car was designed, in the name of looking sportier than the regular IS (which it did). What turned out was it looked good enough to continue the theme, and then the HS came out soon after with a similar shape. The rest is history. But I guarantee you Lexus did not design the IS-F with the intent of a spindle trend.

I think Lexus had the spindle grille in their design's DNA for a bit longer. Even though it was not pronounced as well, it is certainly there:

I found that out by driving my IS300 closely next to a car with concave rear end. The reflection from my car in it looks almost exactly like the spindle grille of the 4GS.

I don't think anyone is saying it did...but the spindle is partly derived from that front design, and other front ends on previous Lexus vehicles

If this trend continues all Lexus sedans will look exacly the same. Just scaled versions of one vehicle with minor visual changes.

that's a good point.

People may not have been able to see it here, but the basic architecture is there. Mix that with a little L-Finesse and fast forward to today and there we have it.

The more thought I put into this, the more it's clear a spindle front end has been seen and used on many cars over the last 15 years. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, and others have all used a reverse front lower air intake opening at some point or another. It's a sporty look and one that Lexus decided to go when all it's competitors locked in a specific grille or front end design theme. Only risk to all this is it makes the entire line-up look too similar, but we'll see as time goes on what happens...

Why are you sorry? I'm glad the new GS is mean and intimidating. Gives it more panache and presence. If anything, I wish it were more Predatorish lol

The new GS is a superior car dynamically and mechanically when compared to its competition. I'm glad that FINALLY, Lexus has the ***** to own up to its intention to dominate its competition and come up with a mean and angry look to the car spearheading its newfound dynamism. At least the GS can back up its look with actual performance and sportiness.

the spindle grill is not actually new to the auto industry.

On some levels, grills are almost always \ / shaped, and lower fascias are almost always / \
