Default Financing a car with a lien on the title

I recently financed a car through chase bank with a lien on the title, they told me the process takes 4 to 6 weeks. I am very curious how does the process work, the car is titled out of New York state and i am registering it in NY. In NY they don't issue temp tags unless i have the title on hand which i don't, and chase is telling me mix info regarding the process. At one point they are telling me they will send the paper work over to the dmv and the dmv will send me the plates and registration however the dmv says they don't accept anything by mail and that i will have to come in person to get plates and registration. Has anyone ever gone through a similar process, please provide me some feedback.

Having a lien on a title basically means that you are not the EXCLUSIVE owner of the car, as the bank/finance company holds a financial interest in the car; until you pay it off. You WILL be issued a title for you to do what is necessary with DMV. When you look at it, there is a section that is entitled "lienholder". This lets DMV know that there is a third party interest in your car and is "officially" owned by them; again until you pay it off. Once you pay the car off, you can request a new title with the "lienholder" information removed in order to have positive proof/piece of mind that the car is now exclusively yours and no problems should arise in the titling, should you decide to sell to someone else. In lieu of a new title, some finance agencies will send a lien release form which basically sates that their financial holding in your car has been satisfied and that they are no longer an interest in your car. You can keep these 2 documents together for the purpose of sale, or you can go to DMV and request a new title. Not sure how NY handles their plating process, lice in MD myself, but SOME states DO mail tags/registrations once proper documentation is received. You stated the DMV "does not ACCEPT anything by mail" and in most cases they are correct, however this does not mean that they will not mail out your tags to you. You really need to look into that. Chase sending paperwork over to DMV mean they they, or even a dealer, will send someone over to PHYSICALLY bring the paperwork over to them since there is paperwork that they will have to fill out, being a lienholder themselves. Get with Chase and see what they have/need to do with your paperwork. They should be able to let you know how long DMV will take with your tags after dealing with them.
