Default Benz made $3 billion last quarter.

$3 billion, a lot of it attributed to China sales.

lexus is late to the game. and being too proud to open a chinese factory is hurting them too.

toyota already has chinese factories. I don't see the harm in having them build lexus models for local consumption too

And I say that much love for Toyota/Lexus!

Link? Unless we see their Income Statement not sure how to tell exactly how they made their money.

Well in regards to China its also b/c Benz sells tons of small engine vehicles that have little or less tax than a Lexus which has a more luxurious and bigger engine. The ES 240 is the first 4 cylinder there.

Also the Germans simply have the prestige over Lexus and the new money there wants prestige and the badge. Believe it or not it hurts Lexus they are the only credible Japanese brand there since Acura and INfinit fare far worse. I agree that the Germans are quicker to sell different variants of cars (LWB 5/A6 for example) compared to Lexus which sells the same vehicles over and over.

Its always Germans vs Lexus. Lexus cannot fight 3 brands.

It's not about simply being proud, but it's also about intellectual property theft, and just theft of technology and production systems in general.

Lexus vehicles are Toyota's flagship products, and they want to keep tight control over where and how they are built. I don't blame them at all. Is Benz building their top products in China? Of course not.

I bet next time around, Lexus will have small engines more suited for these markets... currently they simply do not have them.

I would prefer less production globalization to preserve quality.

Congrats to Mercedes Benz. They are making some serious coin and have managed to knock Lexus off the top position in sales. I dont see Lexus coming back for at least a year or two. The disaster in Japan is only going to make things worse. I really dont see a problem with not having to crank out cars and lower the quality. I am hoping this will mean that Lexus will become the Lexus of yesterday. Rock solid cars with no problems. The newer models are great and advanced but I am sure many will agree they are not built as well as they were back in the day

Geezus they reported a quarterly report for crying out loud and there is no link and we don't have a financial statement. They could have made 3 billion in a number of ways while losing money selling cars.

I love how a thread about MB's earnings in China turns into a Lexus bash-fest by the second sentence.

The morale and community in this forum is akin to middle school.

And this is what separates a human from a corporation.
