Default Do you own a Scan-Tool?

If so, which brand/model?

As an auto enthausics-DIY, not a professional mechanic, I've been thinking of getting a scan-tool. What features/brands etc. does one look for in buying such a tool?

I have an Inovva 3130. Pulls codes, resets/erases codes and does real time analysis. Seems to work fine for me.

I own several, so depends on what you want.

You can do a simple reader, for under a hundred bux. It will only read codes and maybe erase them.

Or, you can go nuts and get a full blown factory level system which is several thousand dollars. I have both (a few of each actually) but use them professionally so it's worth it.

For the DIY type, I'd recommend one that does more than a simple reader. At a minimum, you want a scan tool that does the following:

1) Read codes
2) Erase codes
3) Real Time Data <--- Vital; shows you what the computer is seeing from each sensor in real time
4) Freeze Frame
5) I/M Monitors

Everything else is just extras, like being able to print, internet upgrades, and some even include the most common fixes for each code. But none of that is absolutely necessary.

I use an Actron reader and it's rock solid. I'd recommend it. Launch makes a nice little reader, too. Innova I have never used but hear good things.

Take a look at what each brand offers and choose the tool that meets your needs and budget best.

Go for it. You'd use it more than you think as a DIY guy. Plus you can help your friends and there's always someone you know with the MIL illuminated.

If you have a Laptop, this can't be beat.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...d-your-gs.html <~~scroll to my posts.

It works with Toyota Techstream for ODBII Toyota/Lexus models, Honda HSD and newer Volvos.

It does generic ELM as well for all cars with OBDII.
