The Driver Attention Monitor uses an infrared camera that is designed to monitor the direction of the driver's face while the vehicle is in motion. The system can warn the driver and, if necessary, gently apply the brakes to alert the driver if an object is detected ahead while the driver is facing away from the road.
To further add to what has already been said, it is part of a safety system that monitors your alertness so if you fall asleep or turn your head away from the road for a certain period of time the system warns you and the car also reacts in a number of ways to help prevent an accident.
They are correct but from my understanding it goes into effect when you are looking away and the car senses something up ahead. It will beep/warn you. If a crash is eminent, it will hit the brakes and tighten your seatbelts.

correct. it will only beep when you aren't looking and there is danger ahead, not every time you look elsewhere

wow, pretty cool
does it work if the idiot is busy texting (usually looking down) and ready to plow the driver in front of him or does it require the head to look away?
