Though I like the idea and it's use and welcome an oem moulding, isn't that one a little too low?

Maybe but the design of the door panel could have that area of the door out farther than the rest of the door.
I'm a believer in side moldings on most vehicles. The moldings saved many hits on my last RX and have them on my '10 RX.

I dunno how much side moulding really helps, if you're in a low car (ie: M3) and there's an SUV beside you; your car is getting a ding and you're getting mad

That's true but with my last RX,I had hits on the moldings and only one ding somehow on the front fender near the door.
The moldings seem to work well on the RX.Many other vehicles, not so much.

Yes, too low. It's a piece of chrome stuff for styling reasons, like the one on the current gen C-class Mercedes.

I doubt is mainly for the look.
There's a chrome rocker trim less than a foot under the molding.
The car would look nicer without it.

Who knows? Lots of chrome stuff is the trend today, it won't be the first car in the last few years to have multiple splashes of chrome. Mercedes for one handles it better.

But we do know that the car will collect plenty of door dings because it's mounted so low (especially in the land of the SUV/US). It is kind of ugly for something that is almost worthless from a protection standpoint. Maybe it won't make it into production.

If you look closely, the door actually comes outward at that point where the molding is.Unless the pic is off.
Now suv/crossovers are still a problem but the molding may help parked next to a car.
I agree it's a bit busy with the chrome on the bottom. It really should be color keyed instead of chrome.
On my RX I had the choice of painted color keyed or painted color keyed with a chrome strip middle.I went with the painted color keyed because of the chrome strip on the rocker area.
Like you,I doubt moldings will be there when released and would be very surprised if they were on the car.
