I ended up taping up the front half the hood and fender and then the whole bumper. I was actually glad I did so because it was extremely windy when I was driving and there was sand and debris flying everywhere.

I got a lot of people staring at the blue tape, but I don't mind

Thanks for the tips guys.

hey, I always wonder if after you remove it. does it leave a tape residue? assuming the car has been through a lot of weather condition(heat, sun, rain, wind, snow) on road.

I only ask this because I did something similar a couple years back, but I didn't use painters tape. I used a regular masking tape. and it left a lot of residue.

hahaha painter's tape should not leave residue! I am sure masking tape is not very good for leaving on paint....I have no idea though!

painters tape doesn't have any residue if you get the 14 day one. don't cheap out if you're gonna do it.

the green one has more residue than the 3m(blue) one.

For anyone contemplating a road trip this month or next anywhere within 200 miles of the Gulf Coast, a reminder: this is lovebug season. If you are driving near sunrise or sunset, these little passion-pests rise out of rural pastures, seemingly bent on flinging their acidic bodies against your car's paint. Leave them on more than 24 hours and that acid can get down to a pH 4 that can, in time, eat paint.

After having to repaint a car or two over the years, thanks to these little beasts, I've learned to check the car carefully before hitting the road early in the morning. The night's dew seems to soften them up and a quick trip to a local spray car wash can clean them off your car's finish quickly before they can do any damage. If you drive through a flock during the day, the splats on your windshield should be a reminder to spray down your front end, mirrors, etc. before putting the car up for the evening. When washing, open the hood and spray down your radiator and AC condenser too - those bugs can plug up the air passages in there and really mess with your engine (and cabin) temperature.

We seem to have two seasons for these things, May-June and August-September - just about the time you are driving to or returning from college.

Tape it. And, while your at it, add a second set of floor mats to protect your floor mats.

Might have considered renting a car with unlimited mileage.

My friend took 1 year old 4-Runner cross-country last month. He now had hail damage to roof and hood, unfortunately tape would not have prevented that damage.

Why invest in clear bra if you're just going to tape over it? If something hits your paint hard enough to penetrate your clear bra I doubt a layer of painters' tape is going to help that much more.

We have clear bra on our newer cars and would only consider taping the pillars around the windshield.

BTW some of ya'll are pretty damn sloppy with those tape jobs!
