So is Toyota now actively trying to sabotage the Lexus brand in Japan?

Straight rebadge, old school GM style. And I thought the GX was bad

Maybe they feel that with the Toyota badge upfront it might sell better.

Some sort of market research data must support their decision in some way or another.

WTF? Extremely disappointing that Toyota is continuing its badge engineering tradition. It's OK to share platforms and drivetrains between Lexus and Toyota IMO, but such a blatant rebadging is utterly unacceptable.

Not really. The HS only uses Avensis's platform but not the styling and interior. The Sai on the other hand is pretty much a straight rebadge of the HS.

This really takes the air out of the "Lexus is not a rebadged Toyota" argument.

Technically, it's a rebadged Lexus. So you're getting a bargain Lexus with a Toyota badge?

I'm really interested to see why the Sai is cheaper though.

I guess we have different opinions then cause I disagree. The HS looks boring like a Corolla. I think this HS and the RX were designed by summer interns hence why I notice that the design is worse (unlike the LS, IS, ES, GS and SC which were neat in terms of design).

Hence, IMHO, the Toyota Sai is designed WAY better than its Lexus counterpart

Just my two cents there

P.S.
Oh and it's Japan. They can have craptons of Toyota vehicles in just one vehicle segment/category/class.

JDM loves their niche cars. Just in the compact segment Toyota has tons of conflicting offerings, all with differing styles and options.

Got this info.....Toyota/Lexus are selling every last Hybrid they can make and its hurting US production. This is with low gas prices!!!

In Japan
Prius is already sold out and earliest delivery date to customer is around May 2010
Lexus HS already sold out and earliest delivery date to customer is around June 2010
