Red face Saab officially leaves Canada

Q: What is happening with Saab in Canada?

A: GM announced earlier this year that it would focus its resources on 4 core brands and as such has decided to cease its Saab operations in Canada.

Q. What will happen to existing Saab customers in Canada?

A. GM and Saab will work together to stand behind Saab customers. Existing customers will have their immediate service, parts and warranty needs satisfied through an existing network of GM dealers across Canada. Current Saab owners will be notified of a transition plan to ensure that customer service, parts and warranty services are continued in the future in a satisfactory manner.

Q:Are any Saab future operations planned in Canada under new ownership?

A: Recently GM signed a Stock Purchase Agreement with Koenigsegg Group AB for the purchase of Saab Automobile AB. The closing of the sale is expected in the next months. Saab and the Koenigsegg Group AB are currently in the process of formulating its global operations plan. Upon completion of that plan Saab will share their intentions with respect to its future plans for the Canadian market.

Q: Is what's being discussed with respect to Canada typical of what will happen in other markets where Saabs are marketed primarily in GM dealerships?

A: There are currently no plans like this for other markets.

Hmm, it's not like I see lots of Saabs around, but I see enough ... though maybe it's another one of those things that's specific to Vancouver.

Saab, though, despite its uncertain future (and certainly not one under GM) seems to be going ahead with its new models as planned. In fact, the new 9-5 was officially unveiled online today, and will go on display at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

Yup, this is the 1st step of the end of a great era. I had a SAAB when I was in college, what a great driving car. Too bad GM ruin it.

I cant even remember the last time I saw a Saab on the road. You would have to be pretty rediculous or allergic to reliability and performance to have one imo. They are euro car priced with GM reliability. I think there are about a million other cars on the market that will destroy this POS. Good riddens.

I keep thinking I dont think this brand has ever been known for anything other that quirky stuff like puting the battery under te seats and lame stuff like that.

Saab ...dare I say... Saab is probably worse than an American car.

Until GM took over, Saab was essentially a low-volume company that did oddly-styled, safety-engineered, quirky hatchbacks with large 4-cylinder turbo powerplants that had a small but noted left-wing core buyer group of gays/lesbians, environmentalists, safety-advocates, and college professors (others, or course, bought Saabs, but these were the typical buyers). When GM took over the company and took away some of the quirks of traditional Saabs, making them more like mainstream GM sedans/wagons, they alienated a number of Saab's traditional customers, while, at the same time, failing to attract a lot of new ones. The 9-2X, a redone Subaru Impreza, was probably the best of the newer Saab products, but even that failed to catch on.....customers saw they could by a regular Subaru Impreza itself for less money.

Saab ...dare I say... Saab is probably worse than an American car.
Some GM-vintage Saabs actually shared world-platforms with Chevy, Saturn, and Cadillac products.

sad sad day for Saab. I really like their cars. They're quirky and unique. Too bad GM didn't bother to do anything with them (why did they acquire them anyway?). Ford did a lot with Volvo. Look at Volvo now compared to Saab. Let's hope Koenigsegg has more smarts than GM.

I remeber seeing a yellow convertible Saab dropped on custom wheels in LA in the 90's. What caught my eye was the fact that I think its was the only modded Saab I have ever seen
