Saab officially leaves Canada
Until GM took over, Saab was essentially a low-volume company that did oddly-styled, safety-engineered, quirky hatchbacks with large 4-cylinder turbo powerplants that had a small but noted left-wing core buyer group of gays/lesbians, environmentalists, safety-advocates, and college professors (others, or course, bought Saabs, but these were the typical buyers). When GM took over the company and took away some of the quirks of traditional Saabs, making them more like mainstream GM sedans/wagons, they alienated a number of Saab's traditional customers, while, at the same time, failing to attract a lot of new ones. The 9-2X, a redone Subaru Impreza, was probably the best of the newer Saab products, but even that failed to catch on.....customers saw they could by a regular Subaru Impreza itself for less money.
Some GM-vintage Saabs actually shared world-platforms with Chevy, Saturn, and Cadillac products.

so were they a competitor for the like of Volvo????

More or less. Back in the days when Volvo did mostly shoe-box designs with RWD, some people bought the FWD Saabs as an alternative if they needed better winter traction. Once Volvo started redesigning their cars in the 1990s and going more with FWD, Saab's winter advantage started to disappear. Then Saab lost more customers when GM converted their designs to other platforms.
Saab before GM has some heritage, known for small rally cars in the 70's and was the first mainstream brand to have mass produced turbocharged cars, like the 900 turbo in the 80's, so you have to give them credit for that.
credit runs out when you have not made a decent car relative to whats on the market for close to 25- 30 years
