One of my good friends has one (2006 M5)... that thing is a monster.....

I drove it and the car just never stops giving you the monstrous power. SMG is very fast with no lag, the car handles very beautifully, and the front 2 seats have the cushions that cuff you in on turns.

Sad thing is just recently my friend killed the transmission because of the way he drives it, but his warranty somehow covered it.

the weakest point of the m5's is the tranny....but even then there not bad at all, a couple of friends have them and if ur not gonna go mod crazy it should be fine, the car is amazing to this day it will keep up with the best of them, one thing though the SMG is not for everyone dont expect a smooth ride even on the softest setting those things are harsh, but thats why its an M5 not a 550

yup the tranny is the weaker point on the m5, and the smg is a bit slow compared to the dct, and people say it's pretty harsh. but the car is a complete monster, 500hp in sport mode is insane, everyone i know with the car says the power is endless. gas mileage is not pretty at all though, just so you have the idea

i definitely say make sure you have cpo warranty or get something like that

I'm cool with a harsh ride in a sports car. I understand it's not for everyone, but I like it. I do have some concerns about the SMG. I've heard these have been a bit of an issue. I can't even imagine the cost if they need to be repaired.
Does anyone know of any other maintenance type issues with these cars?

personally i wouldn't even want to find out how much it costs to repair the smg. i haven't heard of much maintenance issues on the car, it's pretty solid

Again, I have never spent much time with an M5, but it seems like allot of car for the money. the 2006 was over 90k new, you can pick up a low mile 06' for less then half that cost. That is allot of car for the money if it holds up.

most luxury cars lose 50% in value after 3 yrs anyway, that's the residual for most cars. last year when i was shopping for m5 (ended up with m3), most m5 loaded were around 96-99k msrp, and i saw a few used selling for 40s. so if you ask me, i think 40k is just about the norm now.

keep in mind, economy is still very very soft. use that to your advantage

I didn't think my friend's SMG was that harsh at all in non-M mode.

Perhaps you should show us a certain video starring this friend's M5

Prices are good on these cars.. I could have one but I am done with used cars especially in rear wheel drive form. If your friend is stuck on the M5, have him purchase a CPO from a BMW dealership & not a used car lot.

Well there are many other used cars that offer alot for the money, so keep that in mind... as a previous poster stated high end cars tend to lose 50% of their value in the first three years...

With that 50% loss in value, you don't know what else you will lose in the longhaul when it comes to high strung used cars like the M5. How was it driven early on in its ownership period are just many of the unknowns..

Get a 2007 M5 with a true Manual tranny. Much more fun to drive IMO.

I WOULD NOT get a SMG tranny without OEM warranty.
