I'm not surprised at all.... Most European dealers are like that, why do you think Lexus walked all over Benz and BMW......

I've been toying the idea of a CPO S4 for a while but they've been really nice with me so far. the MB dealership on the other hand was a bunch of what Clarkson posted.

this is how the game would go down:

me: yeah i'll commit.
audi: ok. we can sell it for $5000 over invoice.
me: ok. you are the weakest link. goodbye.
Oh NO! The car dealer defender...smells like a dealer to me...

Not surprised at all... look how they tried to "back fill" my S5 they never secured and then couldn't get the one I wanted... yet they hit my credit card for the down payment... that's why Audi is permanently off my list!!!

Unfortunately, I8ABMR, that's reality. If a salesman has any inclination whatsoever, that you aren't driving off the lot in a new car, you become a waste of time. It's the number one rule in salesmanship; Always ask for the sale. That's why you will always hear the line "So, if we can agree on a good price, would you be willing to drive this baby home today?" If you say "no", and the salesman knows you mean it, watch how quickly his attitude changes. No matter what you say, he will have a rebuttal up his sleeve. Tell him your shopping, and he'll assure you that you're getting the best price from *him*. If you are test driving a Camry, and then tell him that you want to go test drive the Accord, next, watch out, he probably won't let you off his lot. That *could* be a good thing, though, because you could use that ploy against him to get the best price on the Camry.
Has anybody ever walked into a dealership and asked the first salesman they see for the internet sales manager? It's hilarious how they act because you're wasting their time. I've had salesman literally, turn, and walk away without saying a word!

Although the OP's situation sounds somewhat unreasonable, it is possible that, maybe, just maybe, there was a slight misinterpretation or misunderstanding? Negotiations can be very confusing, sometimes. They're designed to be that way. Although, he could have just had a bad experience at a particular Audi dealership.

Has to be German. I'd also go with BMW.

Damn--I should have said Audi.

I had an Audi dealer treat me that way for an A4 back in 2000. All he would do would quote me monthly payment amounts--he wouldn't give me a price. this was after I had to wait almost an hour to get an Audi salesman (a VW salesman took me on the test drive, and didn't know a lick about the A4).

lots of dealers do this.

They don't want to waste time on you if you're just gonna get up and buy an RX instead.

even if you aren't committed, you can lie and say you are. then walk away at the last minute. you haven't signed any papers....

play the game.
It is a game. A buyer is commited for the right price. But it's INSULTING for the dealer to approach a potential customer in this way. "Committed"? Does the guy just go from dealer to dealer looking at cars with no intention to buy, just to waste everyone's time? It's a moronic way to treat a customer.

Yea, basically, they want to know one simple question; Are you seriously considering a new car purchase, or, are just yanking my chain?

5 minutes later he came back and started to write down some more information.

10 minutes later he comes back with someone (his sales manager I learned) and the manager basically tells me that since I am not commited to the car they are not going to provide a price. I had been sitting for a good 15 minutes at this point. I left a little perplexed, but went to see other dealerships

Subsequent communcations basically said that I should commit to the car before knowing the price (i.e. commit to our product before knowing how much it's going to cost you). Weird right?

Anyways, can you guess what brand I am talking about?
No cash, no credit, childish games are just a waste of the salesman's time regardless of make. Seems you are are back to square one.. No new car..

actually, some people do, just to test drive the cars.

the new Z just came out. I'm gonna go over there and jerk that car around as long as I can.
same with the hyundai coupe. gonna jerk that around too.
I AM wasting the salesman's time, because I have no intention of buying.

you got me man. how'd you know? I own a merc, bmw, bugatti, lambo, and ferrari dealership.

really though, you spent/wasted THIRTY minutes going through the motions. And then you're gonna throw all that time away by not playing the game?

Just pretend you're committed so that they can give you a damn price already. Or if he doesn't want to give you a price, you should take the lead and start negotiations.

I do that sometimes. But I let them know ahead of time that my lease isn't up for a year and if they chose to let me get a test drive, I make sure to get their card. If not, then it's no big deal.

WTF...

Sure I'll play the game:

Dealer: If the price is right, will you take home the S5?
Me: Sure, I'll take the S5 home with $30k out the door...
Dealer: ...

See what I am saying?

By the way, I go to dealers to just test drive but I let them know in advance that I am JUST LOOKING today and want a test drive, if they say no I'll understand. They are out to make money after all...
