I am not surprised that they are acting like this. They did this to my friend when he was looking into buying an S5. He ended up buying an e92 M3 because they treated him better.

They are a bunch of ******.

Not R8, but Q5.
There was one Q5 at the Chicago Auto Show just as it was being introduced and advertised. It was locked! A person from the Audi desk/display unlocked it for me upon request. When I learned that with options, it can approach the high-$40K's I said no thank you.

Funny you mention it being locked. Every single car in the showroom at the Audi dealer was locked. I thought this was strange since every other dealer had unlocked doors so that you can "look inside". I thought that the demo cars are just that, demos, but apparently at Audi they are only for looking (from the outside).

The audi dealership we went to had all of its cars open, but that was a few years back.. maybe its changed.

That's because they are smart. They know how to make deals.

I agree and just for a mundane Q5. Time to go somewhere else.

I tried test driving a Tesla one time, but they said unless I put down a deposit, no way. I was tempted to do it and just say I didn't like it, but too lazy.

there's nothing wrong with asking you to be committed to buying that model.

basically they're asking, if the price is right, will you take home the Q5.

lots of dealers do this.

They don't want to waste time on you if you're just gonna get up and buy an RX instead.

even if you aren't committed, you can lie and say you are. then walk away at the last minute. you haven't signed any papers....

play the game.

Please take the time to read what I wrote. They didn't tell me their price. Why would I verbally commit and give them leverage?

Yes if the price was right I might have taken it home, BUT they didn't give me a price. Extended test drive (his idea), 20-30 mins talking beforehand (his idea), and then 15 mins after the drive of waiting for a price that never came. We seriously went through the options and packages I was interested and he said I'll be right back with some numbers for you...and came back with nothing. Was I supposed to dry hump the car to show my interest? Get on my knees and beg? I thought I showed enough interest by going through all the hoops to get to the price discussion as it was...

.
I already read your whole first post. it's a game.

you're not giving them any leverage at all. They're not gonna jack up the price just because you say you're gonna buy. Words don't mean shtt in america.

this is how the game would go down:

me: yeah i'll commit.
audi: ok. we can sell it for $5000 over invoice.
me: ok. you are the weakest link. goodbye.

waste their time ???? With that attitude from dealerships its no wonder they are going under left and right. I hate car dealers. New or used they are shifty and love to bend the truth

The moment a dealer tries something like that, I am out the door. They are trying to establish up front that they are in a dominant position, and are going to play completely unnecessary games. I don't negotiate large transactions under those circumstances.

LOL. I'll work with a dealer that's not afraid to compete for my business.

I went to multiple dealers when shopping for my GS. I let each dealer know up front that I was doing comparison shopping. The guy who was most accommodating, and most straightforward with me, also happened to be the guy who worked hardest to get me the best price, and treated me great after the sale. Funny how that works.
