The free scheduled maintainence program began in 2001 but only offered 3/36k free sheduled maintainence on new purchases only compared to the 4/50k offered on 04 to present new purchases..
Damn, I wish Lexus have that kinda of maintenances plan/package.
A buddy of mine have a 06' 5xx series, he bought the maint package plan(2k+) because the free schedule maint expired. He say it would cost him at least 1k for every visit to the dealer if he didnt buy the maint plan...the mechanic show him actual amounts if he were to pay w/ out the plan.

I only asked because someone was bragging how great their 00 328 has been in 175K miles. He has kept all records and has paid about $12000+ in maintenance including tires and front end re-paint (doesn't include fuel)...which I thought was very high.
I read somewhere that the 3/36k "free" maintenance was in place in 1999 (at least on the 7 series).

The big problem with the free maintence, is they skimped on a few things, the big one for automatic transmission vehicles is they didn't change the transmission fluid at all! BMW refers to it as 'lifetime fill", the result is failed transmissions. If you ae looking into BMW's read Bimmer, they have all the info on this.
My family hasn't taken too much advantage over this 4yr free maintanence program for the 07 530i, because so far we have only visited the dealer for regular maintanence twice. We have bought the car for a little more than two years already. At most the free maintanence thing have saved us a couple hundred bucks I think, some oil and filter change and check this and check that, doesn't cost much labor or parts.
