RX400 or X5 3.0
People who have driven BMWs for a while don't transition well to the Lexus brand (count me as one).
In your sister's case, if she loved the feel of her 3-series and wants to stick with BMW, then go for it. If she is ready for something different, then consider the RX350 or MDX (the MDX being the better choice if handling and 3rd row are important). I would argue that having a third row (even if it is a small one like the BMW) is a great feature in a sport ute.

Then you wouldn't buy a SUV, but a proper wagon.

No offense but again, X3 reviews were pretty horrid until the late revisions and even then, it became average in reviewers eyes.
I totally agree the RX while much improved over the 1RX, is simply no sports sedan. It wasn't designed to be.
Sporty SUVs were designed to handle like a car. Thats like designing a 747 to fly like a Stealth fighter.
Can I ask, if she plans to keep the vehicle for awhile and with the uncertainty of fuel prices why would you get an SUV that only gets 15/21 unless you really needed the 2 extra seats? Even the RX350 (which would have more power than the X5) would get better gas mileage.
Perhaps its just me, but I wouldn't be buying something fuel inefficient right now. I had always wanted a WRX, but I don't even think that I would get one of those anymore with current pump prices.

Besides, both Audi and BMW wagons are "designer" cars, they took care of design more than actual space for stuff. They always get beaten by euro fwd competition in german tests.
