When Toyota had balls.......
That's part of the point, though. Why does a giant like Toyota have to partner with Subaru on a sporty car? Why didn't they develop it all themselves? They have resources out the wazoo.
It shows to me that Toyota was never completely committed to the idea and that they are basically buying into Subaru's plan so they don't have to commit too much of their own resources into it. In other words, it's them taking a shortcut to the product. If it had been anything else, (a new hybrid, minivan, crossover) you would have had Toyota spending all kinds of money in the development process.
Like you said, Toyota is totally capable with sports cars, as shown by their history. It's not the capability which is in question, it's the mindset... the commitment.

Now I can understand the criticism that the LF-A will be exclusive and expensive, unattainable by most enthusiasts. I think Toyota wants to send a message to enthusiasts, to the competition, and to the world in general. I think the LF-A is a technological and engineering showcase of what Toyota can do when it commits itself to something. What better way to remove doubt from people's minds that Toyota can build a serious performance machine than to make a world-class supercar? The NSX did a lot for Honda's reputation, and came before most of the sporty cars and performance machines Honda has a reputation for.
Even with the IS-F, Toyota is putting some serious effort in removing doubt from people's minds. The IS-F though doesn't even compare in terms of time, and money spent development-wise when comparing to the LF-A.
In terms of partnering with Subaru, it's no secret to any knowledgeable Toyota or Subaru fan that for a LONG TIME Toyota has had great respect for Subaru and their engineering prowess. Toyota continues to raise it's stake in Subaru and I'm sure eventually Subaru will be part of, or pretty much owned by Toyota. Toyota wanted to buy a stake in Subaru, and Subaru agreed. Subaru respects Toyota's engineering prowess as well.
Toyota *could have* done this sports car project by themselves, but why when you have these resources available from Subaru? Toyota is doing what it does best; maximizing the use of whatever resources it has available. Toyota is making maximum use of it's partnership with Subaru.
Toyota has great respect for the engineering of Subaru's boxer engines. Subaru has a lot of experience with these engines. It would be silly for Toyota to build their own boxer engine when they have Subaru's engineers and resources available.
Let's be clear though; this project is MOSTLY Toyota. Toyota is doing the research and development on this project, it's just that they are using some Subaru parts here. The rear axle and RWD components will be Toyota developed. Even though the platform is a Legacy chassis, it will be modified by Toyota in a bunch of different ways. Even the EJ Subaru engine will be modified by Toyota. Subaru has very little experience making RWD coupes, so it's only logical that this project is mostly Toyota.
IF Toyota did not have a partnership with Subaru, I'm SURE they would have done everything themselves 100%. Also lets not forget the rumours of a Toyota-brand hybrid sports car. I ultimately think THAT is where Toyota's mindset is, along with the LF-A.
Funny but I never owned a Toyota and to be honest, not a huge Toyota fan. I do love their methods of business and their execution and how they just dominate in most categories.
When I was younger, those cars were something to think about. Today, the poor Toyota fan has nothing to get a hard on about, unless you find a Camry SE stimulating......You have to jump to Scion....even Lexus offers no coupe outside the SC 430, which is simply not what most young kids want.
Sad really....

Not a lot of people have seen or even know about this car here in the U.S. but Toyota has the fastest FWD vehicle in the market. I know everyone loves RWD but having the fastest of a certain kind gets reognition from me.
I present you with the Toyota Aurion TRD:

2GR-FE Supercharged V6 3.5 engine, sweet interior and nice looking exterior appealing that appeals to certain people....I think this car has some *****
323hp and 295 lb-tq

Also let's not forgot the last-gen Celica GT-S. Despite the controversial styling, for it's day it was, and still is one of the best-handling FWD cars ever made.
Ironic that Toyota had to cancel the last-gen Celica because of low sales. Maybe that car was too radical
. The styling was a few years ahead of it's time, and the car was harsh on the driver if you didn't know how to drive it. The 2ZZ-GE engine was very high revving, and had a narrow powerband which meant a lot of effort was required from the driver.

Yeah, I can not wait for this future half assed effort from Toyota for their new "Toyota sports car" they don't really want to do or care about hence them having to partner up with Subaru and use Subaru parts including the engine because they want to put as little effort or spend as little possible on this next small underpowered sports car. I am sure their will be very long lines waiting to drive this new Subaru/Toyota hybrid with that NA 4 cyl making 180-200hp, if we are lucky it will be faster then a Miata or the base Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky, can't wait, I am sure people are selling their Supras right now so they can get into this thing.
There was a nice sketch of it from a illustrator in a previous thread but I know it is not going to look like that blue sports car with the two small lights on the hood because Toyota is way too conservative now to make something that looks like that if they even go ahead with this new sports car.
Hopefully Toyota will go a different direction then this stupid small Subaru/Toyota NA 4 cylinder rwd sports/sporty car and give enthusiasts something they truly want instead of another safe conservative miata/sky competitor. What is stopping Toyota from a v8 or turbo 6 cylinder high performance sports car like the last Supra to compete against the Corvette, 911, GTR, 370Z, M3, etc that enthusiasts will get excited about and give Toyota some credibility in the sports car department and something to show for with all their F1 effort. So what it may not get great fuel economy or sell in big numbers, they still should offer something and gain some credibility in that market. Toyota can certainly afford to have a high performance halo car that does not sell all that well but is loved, highly sought after, and outperforms other cars in its class and gets reviewed well. If Toyota wants to use some Subaru designs, why not get together and make a twin turbo flat six engine for the next sports car instead of just using a NA 4 cylinder.

. Yet again you bring up Acura for some reason in a thread not about Acura. Seems odd after reading your previous post how I am more or less saying the same thing you did but you single me out for some reason. You start a thread about Toyota not having ***** now and complain they don't offer anything performance oriented then get mad when I agree and criticize them for no offering anything performance oriented.I don't even get where you believe I "love" Acura's current lineup or efforts. I have said I don't care for the RDX and think it should be replaced by something else, it only has a nice interior and a decent powerplant which really should go in the TSX. I said I was dissapointed with the 09 TL exterior but to me it is not horrible like many have been saying, looks much better in person and it has a very nice high quality interior and drives very well, I also was disappointed with the new TSX design and powerplant choice but it has grown on me and it does have a nice interior. MDX is a excellent SUV even if I am not a big fan of SUVs, I was also disappointed in the RL freshup exterior wise but liked the interior enhancements, I do love the NSX, Legend Coupe, last 08 TL and 05-08RL and was highly impressed by the 99-03TL that my parents owned. Even though I am not thrilled with Acuras current lineup I still think they are very solid cars with very good quality and are all reviewed very well and I do not believe any are crap or an absolute joke but I may change my mind once that X6 fighter comes out.
I have heavily criticized Acura for this stupid pointless BMW X6 fighter they are coming out with on this site and other sites and will continue to criticize as it is a pointless vehicle and dumb decision. I have also criticized Acuras lack of sports cars or coupes right now but the ASC(NSX replacement is coming and I am looking forward to it. I also criticized their decision to do a front engined NSX replacement but understand why they did it and hold out hope for a true mid engine NSX replacement in the future. Please don't try to say I absolutely love Acuras and find no fault in them, I am usually just arguing back with your constant Acura bashing and anti Honda/Acura threads. Before you say I am in love with Acura take a look at all the anti Acura/Honda threads and remarks you make week after week often in conversations that have nothing to do with Acura/Honda. My "love" for Acura is about a 1 compared to your hate for Acura which is a 10. I don't go calling Toyota buyers/enthusiasts "sheep" like someone on here does about Honda/Acura enthusiasts/buyers.
Getting back on topic I still won't change my position which is pretty much exactly like yours in that I think it is pathetic Toyota is so successful and has all these SUV/Pickup models for every little segment yet does not have a single sports car or even something remotely interesting to enthusiasts while smaller companies all have something performance oriented that appeals to enthusiasts. This latest partnership with Subaru to maybe make a 4 cylinder rwd sports car with power rumored to be in the 180hp-200hp range does not really excite me much at all. Toyota should have more sports/performance cars and offer a true Supra replacement as that car is legendary even if it is not going to sell in big numbers as well as a true hardtop MR2 replacement, and Celica ALLTRAC type replacement. I miss the days too when Toyota had a twin turbo Supra, turbo MR2, Celica ALLTRAC, and Lexus had a fantastic coupe the SC300/400 and took the performance/enthusiasts market seriously instead of putting pretty much all effort into the SUV/Pickup market.

Think about the numbers - Supra 93 - 98 13k imported. In 98 they sat on the floor for 8 - 10 months. The last 98s sold in 99. TTs weren't even legal in California, the biggest market for sports cars. Between the economy, buyer's preferences, and Toyota's failure to market the Supra with aftermarket TRD or even the smallest of support to aftermarket tuners who were transforming Supras into beasts, the ball sat on the ground.
If there had been no Fast & Furious Supra (thanks Craig Liebermann!), we'd never have known about these cars and they'd've disappeared years ago as cheap used cars. As far as I'm concerned, my Supra is my best car ever - I paid $28.5k in 97, drove it 120k miles and I could still sell it for what I paid for it today (it's a TT hardtop, really rare...). But if there hadn't been a F&F, it would be worth about $9k right now and I'd be lamenting its complete demise in the market.
Toyota doesn't care about enthusiasts. They're the only manufacturer who refuses all attempts to modify their engine management code for tuners to really do marvelous things with Toyotas. They're writing their own operating system just to be certain no one will be able to make unauthorized changes to their ECUs. They just don't care because they can sell Prius and Camry 'til the cows come home and make money instead of dealing with fickle enthusiasts who break stuff and put it back to stock to claim warranty for engines and gearboxes so entire product lines end up being financial losers.
Whatever they do, don't expect it to be mod friendly - seriously - the MkIV Supra was a fluke and they'll never make that mistake again. If you want high performance Toyota, you need to buy a Lotus.

we are gonna need alot more ISF type cars to make for the decade of humdrum fuel sippers. I cant believe that toyota has sat by the past 5 years while nissan cleans up with the 350Z and the G35. Toyota needs to develop the same thing. give me another supra and even a sedan based on the new supra. With the toyota name that car would clean up

Also to correct you, Toyota is partnering with Nissan AND Honda to write that operating system; it's not just Toyota by itself writing it.

wow that is a really nice All Trac another vehicle I miss, I really miss the Corolla GTS too Rwd or Fwd those cars were fun to drive.
